In the early years of the twentieth century, amusement piers were all the rage. They were built in profusion, covering acres of beach and tidelands with a dazzling array of ballrooms, band stands, bathhouses, restaurants, rides and attractions. The Abbot Kinney Pier in Venice was the first, initially built in 1905, it offered nearly unimaginable pleasures: all floating like a mirage above the Pacific, but this vision wasn’t sustainable. The era of the amusement pier lasted less than fifty years. Today, only the Santa Monica Pier remains standing. This photo was taken c. 1905, shortly after the Venice pier opened.” Find out more in TNT Editor Suzanne Guldimann’s new article, Amusement Piers.

Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles has watched over Los Angeles for nearly 250 years. The Spanish Pueblo that became our City of the Angels was founded—and named—in 1781, the year that the Founding Fathers of the United States, having declared themselves free of kings and tyranny, adopted the first Constitution. Our city has weathered many storms, and once again we are at the center of one. Cover photography, concept and design by Urs Baur

On May 23, Topanga Canyon Boulevard reopened for the first time since the Palisades Fire swept through on January 7. The road is still rough, with many delays and road crews at work, Topanga residents rejoiced to finally be connected to the coast again. Here’s a look at the state of the road on the morning of the reopening.

Mustard is beautiful, bitter, spicy, invasive, quick to grow and almost impossible to uproot once it becomes established. This plant’s brilliant golden flowers are synonymous with spring in the Santa Monica Mountains and all over coastal California, even though it is a relatively recent invader. The first mustard seeds arrived during the Spanish colonial period, but mustard’s campaign of total domination had more to do with the Gold Rush, American expansionism, and mid-century disaster response. It’s a larger than life epic for a plant that may be hated, but is still the stuff of legends. Photo by Suzanne Guldimann. Cover design and concept by Urs Baur

What do ballerinas, pirouetting across a stage in elegant costumes and dainty slippers, have in common with first responders, working tirelessly for days on end to ensure the safety of millions of Angelenos? An immense amount of strength and resolve. Find out more about Westside Ballet’s Spring Gala in Elizabeth Guldimann’s new feature, Westside Ballet Takes Pointe.

If you can’t beet ‘em, join ‘em! 🥗
Colorful, zesty, crunchy, and fun, this salad is easy to make, tastes great, is packed with nutrients, and has beautiful, nearly psychedelic colors. It makes a great side dish or a light entree, and even the most vegetable-adverse might be tempted to give it a try. Who could resist those vibrant colors?

Topanga Days—the Canyon’s celebrated, one-of-a-kind music festival—is turning 50 this Memorial Day weekend and we have all the details. The full schedule of how to get there is on page 11, and don’t miss our inside look (page 13) at the Topanga Community Center volunteers whose tireless work makes this amazing three-day festival happen every year. This year’s festival is significant not only because it marks 50 years, but because it is a validation of this community’s indomitable spirit. Topangans will be coming together to celebrate music, family, creativity, and fun, despite the challenges so many have faced during the fire and its aftermath. See you there!
