Amidst the charred trees and ashes along the 20200 block of PCH, just east of where Moonshadows once stood, this wounded angel rises. A haunting yet graceful figure, it symbolizes the resilience and grace of the City of Angels—badly hurt but not defeated. So much was lost in such a short time. Angelenos are still in shock over the devastation wrought by a week of deadly fires. Topanga, so close to ground zero for the Palisades Fire, came through the firestorm not unscathed—there have been heartbreaking losses—but with its heart still beating. The Topanga New Times crew is piecing together the events of the last week in Topanga and its neighboring communities: courage, heroism, loss, and survival. Cover concept and design by Urs Baur

A note from Topanga Town Council: Topangans, we hope this message finds you safe and sound.
The Town Council has received hundreds of Access Card orders over the last two weeks. Under normal circumstances, we require 2-4 weeks to process cards. For those of you who ordered cards in December, if you have not yet received them, they may be waiting at the Santa Monica post office, where mail has been rerouted. (While you can pick up your mail in SM, it will eventually be delivered to Topanga.) Our volunteers are working their way through all the rest of the orders, trying to get them in the mail as quickly as possible.
Please remember, we have spent the last two weeks evacuated like all of you.
You will still be able to get into the canyon without an Access Card, as long as you can provide address verification to officers at the roadblocks.
The purpose of the Access Card program is to identify your zone number and expedite reentry when law enforcement deems it safe to return.
We thank you for including the Topanga Access Card as part of your preparedness program. All proceeds go toward community programs.

TNT columnist Jimmy P. Morgan’s reflections on reading a collection of Stephen King short stories while camping alone in the Southwest was one of our most popular stories of the year. With its frision of horror, it was perfect for our Halloween issue, but there’s far more to King than horror. This column, and the book that inspired it, deserve another look, and not just because this was a fascinating trip into the Twilight Zone.

This feature on the history of Topanga Canyon Blvd by TNT Editor Suzanne Guldimann first ran in TNT’s April 5 issue. It started out as an update on the road closure caused by the massive rockslide in the lower canyon, and grew into a history of the canyon road. It’s a companion piece to the feature on the history of PCH, and it highlights the hazards of life in a young mountain range that is still geologically active. Topanga Canyon Blvd. reopened on June 2, after a more than three-month closure.

FINAL CHAPTER 📚 The Coastwatchers debuted in TNT’s Storyland section on November 4, 2022. It was written in the spirit of an old-fashioned fiction serial, and provided a way for TNT editor and Coastwatchers author Suzanne Guldimann to share some of the WWII Malibu lore she heard growing up. This is the final chapter. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us. Coming soon at New Times Radio, Claire Chapman reads the final chapters.
