Prince Rogers Nelson was a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor. He has produced 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles during his career. He also has several hundred unreleased songs in his "vault".
Prince wrote and produced his own music and played most of the instruments; he established his own recording studio and label.
In addition, he promoted the careers of Sheila E., Carmen Electra, The Time and Vanity 6. His songs have been recorded by these artists and others, including Chaka Khan, The Bangles and Sinéad O'Connor
Prince had a wide vocal range and was known for his flamboyant stage presence and costumes. His releases have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. He has won 7 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the first year he was eligible.
Rolling Stone has ranked Prince No. 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
Prince pioneered the "Minneapolis sound", a hybrid mixture of funk, rock, pop, R&B and new wave that has influenced many other musicians.
April 21, 2016: Prince died 19 minutes after the paramedics arrived. He was 57.
A press release from the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Anoka County on June 2 stated that Prince died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl.
Prince's cremated remains were placed into a custom, 3D printed urn shaped like the Paisley Park estate. The urn was placed on display in the atrium of the Paisley Park complex in October 2016.
