Greetings friend in Michigan! Even though Danielle and I are thriving in Alaska, I still miss the Keweenaw and the lovely community there. I took many of the lessons learned at Root Cellar Farm to write a book! I hope it helps more farmers and gardeners in the UP (and beyond!) keep and sell veggies deep into winter!

My new book, Beyond the Root Cellar, gets into the art and science of storage at scales both large and tiny. It's set to release this December through Chelsea Green Publishing but is available for pre-orders now (most places books are sold). Pre-ordering is the best way to support an author and helps more people to see the book.

Would you believe I made these bunches with kale that has been stored for over 3 weeks? Both professional farmers and weekend warriors can benefit by learning a thing or two about storing produce. Extend your eating season with veggies from your farm or garden!

Thanks to everyone who supported Root Cellar Farm throughout the years! We're sad to inform everyone that we moved out of the Upper Peninsula to Fairbanks, Alaska in January 2020. We just bought a house with land and plan to start a new farm in Fairbanks. We're excited about the new beginning, but sad to leave our friends and neighbors behind.

The growing season is here! We are offering lots of specials featuring our local bounty like this wedge salad with iceburg from Root cellar farm and fresh dill from Metsa Hill farm.

This week we have The Bosch with garlic scapes, baby kale, fresh mozzarella, dill, bronze fennel fronds, chives, and oregano topped with garlic scape pesto.

Growth is exploding in the warm weather! Much more seedling and transplanting to go in June.

Spring Updates: Garlic shoots are emerging from under straw mulch. Beds for late planting have been seeded with cover crop mix of peas and oats and top-dressed with compost. Trying new no-till methods with winter squash and will be transplanting straight through the cardboard in about 6 weeks.

We had an amazing work party yesterday. A huge thanks to Phil and Cindy Knapp who helped us pull, wash, and dry 800 pounds of carrots, all in one day!

We really appreciate the work by Melissa Hronkin and John Hersman at Algomah Acres Honey House Meadery this past Saturday! Their annual Harvest Fest was a blast to participate in. Even met new farmer friends in the area from Bare Roots Farm! Thanks for the pumpkin!
