Thomson, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has implemented a 4-way stop configuration at State Route 17 and the Thomson Bypass, just south of Thomson.

Georgia DOT's long-term plan for this intersection is a roundabout. The contractor constructing the roundabout has been given the notice to proceed. To help crews safely perform work, we are implementing a 4-way stop at this intersection for the duration of the project.

On Monday, December 2, crews began changing the configuration of the intersection. New stop signs and rumble strips have been installed on SR 17. In addition, the lane configuration of SR 17 and the Thomson Bypass/Wire Rd. has been adjusted approaching the intersection. Existing stop signs on the Thomson Bypass/Wire Rd. will remain.

The roundabout is currently scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2026.

Advisory: Work schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions. Drivers are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.

Augusta, Ga. - Georgia Power has informed the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) of Hurricane Helene-related utility damage that must be repaired on Interstate 520/Bobby Jones Expressway near milepost 1. Both directions of I-520/Bobby Jones Expressway, and both directions of Interstate 20 will be impacted by this work scheduled for Saturday morning.

On Saturday at 9 a.m., Georgia State Patrol is scheduled to pace traffic on both interstates. In each direction, utility trucks will be joined by three GSP cars. Troopers will slow traffic to 20mph. Once traffic is slowed, one GSP car will es**rt the utility trucks to the work site. The two remaining GSP cars will continue pacing traffic at 20mph while the utility company performs its work.

I-20 West: Pacing will begin at milepost 198.6, approximately ½ mile west of Exit 199/Washington Road. Thru traffic on I-20 will be released and allowed to resume normal flow after passing Exit 196/Bobby Jones Expressway. Pacing will continue for traffic using Exit 196.

I-20 East: Pacing will begin at milepost 194.1, approximately ¼ mile east of Exit 194/Belair Road. Thru traffic on I-20 will be released and allowed to resume normal flow after passing Exit 196/Bobby Jones Expressway. Pacing will continue for traffic using Exit 196. Access to I-20 East via Wheeler Road will be closed.

I-520 West: Pacing will begin at milepost 4.5, approximately ¾ mile west of Exit 5/Deans Bridge Road. Access to I-520 West via Wrightsboro Road and Gordon Highway will be closed.

SR 232/Bobby Jones Expressway East: Pacing will begin at Old Trail Road and Bobby Jones Expressway, the final intersection before Bobby Jones Expressway becomes I-520. Access to I-520 East via Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and Wheeler Road will be closed.

The utility company told Georgia DOT this work should take about 15 minutes to complete. Once work is complete, traffic will be released and allowed to resume normal flow. If traffic reaches the work zone before work is complete, GSP will slow down and/or stop traffic until work is complete.

Signs with the messages "Be Prepared to Stop," "Road Work 1/2 mile," and "Road Work 1 mile" will be placed 1500 feet, 1/2 mile, and 1 mile respectively in advance of the starting points of each pacing.
