Exemplifying Sportsmanship with the Marshmanship Project

Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, five Horicon High School students were chosen to form the Marshmanship Project, led by Amy Rodriguez.
According to Michael LeBouton, athletic director, “Their main purpose is to promote positive sportsmanship at our events.”
It is “Horicon’s commitment to fair play, ethical behavior, and integrity to be displayed by all athletes and fans.”
Since the beginning, the group of student leaders has grown to 14 and every grade is represented. Keeping in mind a student’s behavior, grades, attendance, and availability that were considered when selecting the original five students, the current members now nominate and invite their classmates to join and no one is turned away.
Pictured above are the students involved in the Marshmanship Project at Horicon High School: Diego Rodriguez, Madison Boeck, Quinten Brown, Owen Muche, Christian Schwartz, Quinlin Jackl, Azelyn Heller, Sarah Hodgson, Parker Muche, Kaitlyn Wiard, Aubrie Cundy, Bryce Franz and Felix Rodriguez. I recently turned to a book called Old Wisconsin, published in 1879 Milwaukee. In that book is a memoir written by John H. Warren, who along with his parents were the first settlers Town of Hubbard. Warrens were Old Yankees from New York who settled near the Herman/Hubbard township line (Neda) area in May of 1845.

Warren goes on to write in his memoir, “The town of Williamstown, of which Mayville is the principal village, was first opened up to white settlers in May 1845 by Alvin and William Foster, and Chester May. These gentlemen selected their site for their mills, commenced (constructed) a dam and built the sawmill in the summer of 1845.
