WASHINGTON -- Alcohol is a leading cause of cancer, a risk that should be clearly labeled on drinks Americans consume, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy proposed on Friday.

Murthy's advisory comes as research and evidence mounts about the bad effects that alcohol has on human health, but his proposal for a label would require a rare approval from the U.S. Congress.

Heading into 2025, thousands of workers face an unsettling reality: after years of working from the comfort of home, they must return to the office full-time for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic or look for new work.

NEW YORK -- Jason LaCroix felt privileged to work from home, especially as a father to two young children. He needed flexibility when his son, then 6, suffered a brain injury and spent 35 days in intensive care.

Two employees of Rainbow Signs, of Louisiana, install the CHRISTUS Health sign on the hospital system's Pine Street campus, formerly known as Wadley Regional Medical Center, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2025, in Texarkana, Texas. CHRISTUS Health, an international, not-for-profit Catholic health system, finalized its purchase of Wadley on Nov. 1, 2024. A federal bankruptcy judge in Texas approved the sale in September. What will our gardens look like in 2025? The thing about opinions is that everybody's got one. The same can be said about predictions.

One group with a pretty good track record is Katie Dubow's Garden Media Group, a public-relations company serving plant breeders, nurseries and others in the green industry. Its annual Garden Trends Report forecasts how environmental, fashion, food, retail, media and other trends will trickle down into the gardening realm.

When Annabelle Pleskoff was 15, she woke up before school one morning with severe pain radiating from her right side.

After hours of persistent throbbing, she went to the emergency room, where doctors initially thought she had mild appendicitis and sent her home. Later, she received an unexpected diagnosis: kidney stones, typically an affliction of older adults.

Now 25, Pleskoff, a Seattle native who has endured more than 30 kidney stones, is part of a troubling trend in pediatric health. Kidney stone cases are rising among children, and some medical professionals implicate a familiar culprit: ultra-processed foods. Other experts trace the increase to genetics, poor diet and insufficient water intake.

Pasticceria Gollini in Vignola, Italy, not far from Modena, is home to the sumptuous flourless chocolate cake known as torta Barozzi.

Created in 1886 by pastry chef Eugenio Gollini and named for Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, a 16th-century architect, the much-loved sweet continues today to be produced according to a closely guarded secret recipe.

Professional and home bakers alike have attempted to re-create the dessert, and we set out to devise a formula. It's well known that torta Barozzi is made without wheat flour, and is therefore gluten-free. Instead, a combination of ground peanuts and almonds -- along with whipped egg whites -- delivers a structure that's somehow rich and dense yet remarkably light.

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- The Twin Cities have a multitude of resources for those who are homeless or have difficulty with resources, but there is a specific subset of that community that is often left unaddressed.

Texarkana has a number of homeless people who are also pet owners. These people will often share their meals with their dogs, take turns holding the animal so that their friends can get meals, and often feel the beating of inclement weather as they protect their furry companions.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The new year will bring a pair of lunar eclipses, but don't expect any sun-disappearing acts like the one that mesmerized North America last spring.

While the world will have to wait until 2026 for the next total solar eclipse, the cosmos promises plenty of other wow moments in 2025.
