“Native women have never been alone in our experiences. This collective of poems, essays, and short stories only prove the universality of our struggles. With this collection of pieces, Yáamay, which means ‘to endure’ in Chamtéela, shows the universality of our struggles. We carry our past with us, with the joy of our ancestry compounded with the trauma of genocide and colonialism. Much of our inspiration for creat- ing this book came from personal stories and documents of the Native existence, like the excerpts from Yumáyk Yumáyk, written by Villiana Hyde. The continuation of Indigenous cul- tures has relied on the strengths of our women, despite every attempt to injure, assault, and silence us. It is with this under- standing that we separated the pieces into the four natural parts of our story: Tówla, Kúp, Wólnish, and $ó’a.”
