I OVERHEARD MY HUSBAND ORDERING A NEW TV & PLAYSTATION WITH MY COLLEGE FUND — HE DIDN'T GET HOW MISTAKEN HE WAS THEN

I've been on maternity leave for years, taking care of our three kids in a row.

I can’t even begin to tell you HOW BADLY I want to work! I've been working part-time from home whenever I could, and for years, I've saved money for my education. I wanted to change careers and work full-time as the kids grew up and went to school.

My plan was perfect until I accidentally overheard my husband Jack'S conversation with his friend, Adam:

I AGREED TO TAKE PICTURES OF MY COUSIN'S WEDDING FOR FREE, BUT HE MOCKED MY JOB – KARMA DIDN'T LET IT SLIDE. I love my cousin like a brother and wanted to make his day perfect. I'm a professional photographer, and even though I did it for free, I put my heart into every shot, wanting to give him the best memories. Things were going great until his new wife saw one picture she didn't like. She started mocking my skills, and my cousin, instead of defending me, joined in. It was so out of character for him, but she's got this toxic charm that pulls him in. During the family group photos, it was chaos. People were all over the place, and I tried to remind them, "Hey, look at the camera!" But my cousin snapped, all annoyed, "Just take the pictures and stay out of the way." His wife chimed in, "Yeah, we don't need a wannabe artist bossing us around." When I mentioned I was doing it for free, my cousin sneered, "It's not like anyone should pay for that. Just a few days into married life, Matt casually dropped a bombshell. While we were lounging on the couch, he said, "Oh, by the way, we'll be giving your salary to Mom. She'll manage our budget."

I laughed, thinking he was joking. "What?"

"Mom has this great system," he said, completely serious. "50% goes to the husband for personal needs, 25% for groceries, and 25% for gifts to Mom and family. She's handled finances like this for years—it's perfect. She says, 'A HUSBAND'S CHEER, MAKES LIFE DEAR!'"

I stared at him. "You're joking, right?"

"No," he replied, looking genuinely confused. "This is how a real family works. You agreed to this when you married me."

On Christmas morning, my husband Carl and son Logan, 5, were about to start opening gifts. Everything seemed perfect. Until I noticed it.

This weekend, I had my parents over for dinner. My 10-year-old daughter had been practicing this song on her keyboard, and she was dying to show it off. Her eyes lit up when she asked if she could play it for everyone. Of course, I said yes. As a single dad, I'm trying to do my best to make her happy. MY 5-YEAR-OLD SON OBJECTED AT MY WEDDING — HIS REASON MADE EVERYONE GO PALE.

Picture this: the sun's out, the venue is perfect, everyone's laughing and chatting. I'm about to marry Tom, the guy I've been with for three years, and my son Ethan absolutely adores him. Seriously, they're like best buddies, always playing with toy cars or building Lego castles.

They were saying goodbye at prom, holding hands and crying, knowing their high school romance was about to end. Her family was moving to Europe, and this was their last moment together.

"IF WE EVER LOSE TOUCH, PROMISE ME WE’LL MEET ON CHRISTMAS EVE, TEN YEARS FROM NOW, AT TIMES SQUARE. EVEN IF WE’RE MARRIED OR HAVE KIDS. JUST TO TALK," she said, her voice trembling. "I’LL BE HOLDING A YELLOW UMBRELLA. THAT’S HOW YOU’LL FIND ME."

"I PROMISE," he said, squeezing her hand. "TEN YEARS FROM NOW, CHRISTMAS EVE, TIMES SQUARE. I’LL BE THERE LOOKING FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LADY WITH A YELLOW UMBRELLA, NO MATTER WHAT."

A decade passed, and they did lose touch. One day, her letters just stopped coming.

Now, here he was, standing in Times Square, scanning the crowd of Christmas revelers for someone holding a yellow umbrella. His heart raced with every passing second.

Then, he heard a small, squeaky voice from behind him. "ARE YOU PETER?"

He turned around to see a little girl, no older than ten, holding a yellow umbrella.
