Thursday 6:30 PM forecast update…

What would normally be an all hands on deck once in a decade half foot snow forecast seems pretty benign tonight in light of recent weather conditions but here we are…

-snow begins around 9:00 AM in Tell City (sooner west and later east)
-snow ends Friday evening
-temperatures below freezing and ground conditions solidly frozen making for quick and easy accumulations
-travel will be hazardous and is not recommended
-temperatures Sunday will rise above freezing for a few hours before heading back below freezing with several more days well below freezing
-several light snow chances next week with a bigger storm possible by next weekend

You know the drill. Cozy up. Hunker down. And for the love of God, check on your neighbors.

Go Irish!

Thursday 4:00 AM forecast update…

Plenty of wintry mischief in the forecast for the next 36 hours. While not comparable to what we have endured this week, what is upon us and what is coming will definitely be a nuisance and impacts appear greater than originally expected as the storm has strengthened and the forecast track has moved northwest.

-Bitterly cold temperatures are expected this morning. A Cold
Weather Advisory is in effect through mid-morning.
-Areas of Dense Freezing Fog is possible this morning, causing
black ice on untreated roadways. Freezing Fog Advisory is in
effect through mid-morning.
-A significant winter storm will affect the region on Friday and
Friday night. Widespread snowfall accumulations of 3-6 inches
with locally higher amounts across far southern KY are expected.
-Winter Storm WARNING has been issued for the entire area for Friday

Snow is expected to begin around 8:00 Friday morning and last until around 8:00 Friday evening with around 4 inches accumulation along the Ohio River. Several locations will see higher amounts. Temperatures will be well below freezing all day at all levels of the atmosphere so snow is the only precipitation expected. Travel will once again be hazardous and is not recommended Friday into Saturday. We should see one day above melting point Sunday before another cold front comes through Sunday night.

By now you know the drill. Today is the day to get out if you need additional supplies! Be warm and well and stay safe. And for the love of God, check on your neighbors.

5:30 PM Sunday update from the NWS Storm Prediction Center:

Several more hours of freezing rain, heavy at times, is expected….

Mesoscale Discussion 0015
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0512 PM CST Sun Jan 05 2025

Areas affected...Portions of southern Indiana and northern Kentucky

Concerning...Freezing rain

Valid 052312Z - 060415Z

SUMMARY...Additional freezing rain, moderate to heavy at times, is
possible through about midnight to 1 AM EST.

DISCUSSION...Freezing rain continues to be observed in portions of
southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. Continued ascent from
low-level warm advection and the approach of the upstream trough
will promote continued precipitation into this evening. Regional
radar shows some heavier pockets of precipitation moving eastward
from western Kentucky/southern Indiana. Dual-pol radar and surface
observations indicate that a transition to snow is roughly along the
Ohio River and should remain in that general vicinity. By midnight
to 1 AM EST, weakening ascent and drier air moving in aloft will
likely begin to limit overall precipitation rates and potential for
ice accumulations.

Sunday 3:30 PM south Indiana forecast update…

Heavy rain and 30 degrees as of this writing with all surfaces getting a layer of ice. Heavier rainfall rates actually limits ice accretion if there is any silver lining but we still have another 12 hours of light freezing rain to endure so the worst is yet to come.

-Major winter storm continues across the Ohio Valley, with the heaviest mixed precip and ice accumulations expected this evening
-Isolated thunder could result in locally higher precipitation totals
-A long period of freezing drizzle is likely overnight
-An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow possible Monday
-Bitterly cold temperatures are expected this week as an Arctic airmass overspreads the region
-sub-zero temperatures for some Thursday morning
-another storm system could possibly bring accumulating snow Friday into the weekend
-significant damage to trees and power lines expected overnight
-power outages likely and some widespread and long duration

Tonight will be one of those “not fit for man nor beast” nights across most of Indiana and Kentucky. In fact as icing continues to build, if you are outdoors, you are in a dangerous and life threatening situation as trees and power lines break apart.

Speaking of “beasts” - if your pets are outdoors this week for extended periods of time, please stay outdoors with them so they can look you in the eye as they suffer.

Hunker down, cozy up, say some prayers this part of the forecast is a complete bust and for the love of God, check on your neighbors.

11:00 AM south Indiana forecast update….

As of this writing precipitation in Tell City has changed from snow to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain with a temperature of 27 degrees. A total of 5.5” snow has been measured so far.

Unfortunately outdoor conditions will now take a turn from bad (although pretty and peaceful) to very very bad throughout the remainder of the event as sleet and freezing rain will continue for much of the next 12 to 18 hours before changing back to snow early Monday. Gusty winds will increase throughout the day as well which will make trees and power lines very susceptible to breaking.

Impacts are expected to worsen with deteriorating conditions through the rest of the day and on into tomorrow. Note on the winter storm severity index “extreme impacts” are forecast for south Indiana.

Hunker down, cozy up, and for the love of God, check on your neighbors!

Sunday 7:30 AM forecast update from the NWS Storm Prediction Center:

Mesoscale Discussion 0007
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0727 AM CST Sun Jan 05 2025

Areas affected...east-central Missouri...parts of southern
Illinois...southern Indiana...and parts of central Kentucky.

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 051327Z - 051730Z

SUMMARY...1+ inch per hour snowfall rates are expected this morning.

DISCUSSION...Light to moderate snowfall has developed within a
swath from central Missouri to central Kentucky this morning with a
few heavy snow observations appearing recently in southern Illinois
and southern Indiana. Expect moderate to heavy snow in a relatively
narrow corridor north of the freezing rain from east-central
Missouri to parts of central Kentucky. In addition to the radar
depiction and surface observations indicating heavy snow, the 12Z
HRRR shows a swath of significant accumulation between 13Z and 17Z.
By midday much of this area will switch to freezing rain with the
heavy snow swath shifted farther north during the afternoon as warm
air advection strengthens ahead of the approaching surface low.

Sunday 4:30 AM south Indiana forecast update….

It’s go time! The official forecast below reads like a sci-fi novel but…this is real life unfortunately.

-major winter storm entering the area with substantial disruption to daily life lasting throughout this week
-precipitation will be ongoing throughout the entire day into tonight
-snow and sleet this morning changing to sleet and freezing rain this afternoon lasting well into overnight when we may have a brief break before the final wave of snow Monday morning
-temperatures a tad warmer than forecast bringing changeover from snow to freezing rain and sleet sooner than originally predicted
-snow amounts along the Ohio River look slightly less while ice looks to be the predominant threat
-windy conditions and significant icing will cause substantial damage to trees and power lines as we head into late Sunday
-widespread power outages expected and some long term
-travel will be impossible in many areas
-harsh and dangerous temperatures by midweek

Hunker down, cozy up, take care of pets and loved ones and yourselves and for the love of God, check on your neighbors. 75 days until Spring!
