(Rockdale)--Rockdale ISD is looking into a program that will provide financial incentives to recruit and then keep the best teachers. Rockdale ISD is working to embrace the Teacher Incentive allotment. The program is designed to keep teachers connected to education, providing them financial incentives. The Texas Education Agency formed a task force to determine how the state could respond to the loss of teachers, after nearly 50 thousand teachers left the education profession in 2022-2023. Many cited low salaries as the reason behind the departure. Tiffany Whitsel, Rockdale ISD Assistant Superintendent for Federal and State programs, told KRXT that the program was designed to retain teachers with a bonus, which is not common in education.

(Taylor)--The Taylor City Council discussed a code enforcement supervisor position during Thursday's council meeting. Development Services director Scott Dunlop recommended that the Council add a Code Enforcement Supervisor Position within the Code Enforcement division of his department. The Council had approved a Senior Planner position in fiscal year 2024-2025 that is funded from the City's general fund. The Council approved the move. The Council also received a presentation on the African-American burial section monument and the cemetery grave location app presented by Morgan Cook, Cemetery Sexton.

(Giddings)--The Lee County Law Enforcement support organization held its 3rd Annual Gala January 18th in Giddings. The event raised thousands of dollars in support of all law enforcement in Lee County. Giddings Police Department officer Adam Moore was named Lee County Professional of the year for 2024. Retired DPS Trooper Bob Thorp, a Lee County LESO Board member, served as emcee for the event. He said the organization was born on Dec. 14th, 2021, as the "defund the police" movement was surging across the nation. He said the organization was created to fill the gap when law enforcement budgets are reduced.

(Rockdale)--Rockdale Junior High Girls basketball action vs Cameron--7th Grade B defeated Cameron 17 to 10. Player of the game was Lia Carter. 7th Grade A beat Cameron 30 to 23. Player of the game was Jaci Rae Cato. 8th Grade A beat Cameron 24 to 21. PLayers of the game were Ava Vences and Makenzi Valdivia.

(Rockdale)--The Rockdale Tiger and Lady Tiger Soccer teams are back in action tonight as the teams travel to Taylor. The JV Boys game starts at 4:15 pm, followed by Varsity Girls at 5:30, and Varsity Boys at 7:30 pm. The Rockdale Tiger and Lady Tiger Basketball teams are back in action as they travel to Academy tonight. JV games at the old and new high schools start at 5 pm. Varsity Girls play at 6:15 at the new High School, with the Varsity Boys to follow.

(Rockdale)--The Rockdale School Board set the school board election during the board meeting Wednesday. The board set the election for May 3rd, 2025, and approved an election agreement and contract for election services. The Board approved a resolution authorizing the Superintendent to enter into joint election agreements. The School District will hold a joint election with the city of Rockdale for the City Council election, and Milam County will provide the voting equipment and results tabulation. Board President Charles Miles in Place 4 and Amy Casas in place 3 are up for election. Also, the Place 5 seat on the board is currently vacant and will be up for election on the May ballot.

(Buckholts)--Cameron and Buckholts firemen responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of 8th Street in Buckholts. Firemen were called to the scene around 12:25 Wednesday morning. Firemen were able to put the fire out. Cameron firemen responded to a vehicle fire at Jefferson and 12th in Cameron around 12:35 Wednesday afternoon. That fire was put out quickly.

(Undated)--Concerns have been raised about a lack of warming centers in Williamson County. Several non-profit organizations have joined together in Williamson County in recent weeks to turn a church into a temporary emergency overnight shelter. In a statement, Williamson County officials siad they do not have the population density of unhoused residents that would be necessary to create warming shelters.

(Rockdale)--In sports, the Rockdale Soccer teams played make-up games against Salado after the games were moved back from Tuesday due to the inclement weather. The Rockdale Tiger boys fell to 12th ranked Salado 3 to 1. The Rockdale Lady Tigers fell to Number 2 ranked Salado, 6 to 0. The Rockdale Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams travel to Academy on Friday.

(Undated)--The wintry precipitation has left Central Texas. The Milam County Sheriff's Office warned of black ice on some roads and bridges due to re-freezing last night and into the early morning hours this (Wednesday) morning. The area went through temperatures in the teens and 20's overnight. Some warming is expected, although meterologist Troy Kimmel noted that it might be a bit slower than initially expected. Temperatures are expected to reach the 40's today and the 50's Thursday and Friday.

(Central Texas)--Most area schools were back on normal schedule this (Wednesday) morning. Lexington ISD opened on a 2 hour delay today. All classes began and offices opened 2 hours later than normal, and buses ran 2 hours later. Rockdale ISD is running on a normal schedule today.

(Taylor)--The Taylor Police Department Victim Services Unit is seeking volunteers. The Victim Services Unit provides immediate on-scene crime response to victims of crime or traumatic circumstances. Volunteers have the opportunity to work directly with crime victims, law enforcement and other first responders. Anyone interested in becoming a part of the Taylor Police Department Victim Services Unit must be at least 21 years of age, live in or close to the City of Taylor, pass a background check and have a valid Texas Driver's License. (Undated)--Central Texas continues to deal with the Winter Storm that is moving through the area. Williamson and Lee Counties remain under a Winter Storm Warning until 6 pm. Milam County remains under a Cold Weather Advisory until 9 am Wednesday. Wintry precipitation came through Central Texas in the evening and into the overnight hours, with sleet followed by snow in some areas including Rockdale and Taylor. The snow showers were expected to be ending this (Tuesday) morning. As wintry precipitation has built up, the Milam County Sheriff's Office reminds Milam County residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. (Austin)--The Chairman of the board for the agency that controls the electric grid for 90 percent of Texans says this week's winter weather will not result in record electric demand. ERCOT Chairman Bill Flores said ERCOT is projecting a peak demand this week of 79 Gigawatts. Flores said the record was 86 Gigawatts in August 2023.

(Undated)--Central Texas recognized the occasion of Dr. Martin Luther King Day with parades, marches and events. Rockdale honored Dr. King with its annual Martin Luther King Jr Day parade, with refreshments such as hot dogs, chili dogs and drinks that followed. Taylor recognized the day by holding the 20th Annual Greater Taylor Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day march which led to the city library, where a ceremony was held to remember Dr. King and the work for Civil Rights.

(Rockdale)--As a number of basketball games likely face the possibility of being moved back due to weather, the Rockdale Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams don't have to deal with that issue since their bye in the district schedule comes up today. The Rockdale Lady Tiger basketball team is looking to build momentum after defeating Lexington at home in a thriller 38 to 37 last Friday. The Lady Tigers made a strong defensive stand in the 3rd quarter, not allowing one field goal from Lexington in the frame, while only allowing one point on a free throw. The Lady Tigers surged out in front in the quarter and held on from there. The Tigers and Lady Tigers travel to Academy on Friday.

(Rockdale)--Rockdale ISD has announced that all schools in the district will be closed on Tuesday, January 21st. The District said on its page that after closely monitoring the winter storm forecast and consulting with local authorities, school district officials came to the decision to close all schools on Tuesday, January 21st. RISD said school officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates regarding school activities through the district website, social media channels and the parent notification system by noon Tuesday. (Undated)--Central Texas has seen the arctic cold front move into the area, and wintry precipitation is expected overnight tonight into Tuesday morning. The weather forecast calls for a high of about 39 today. This afternoon and evening Troy Kimmel's weather forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of wintry precipitation, with the possibility of one to two inches of snow. Snow showers are expected tonight, mainly after midnight. Rockdale ISD has a school holiday today for Martin Luther King Jr Day. Rockdale ISD is monitoring the weather conditions and a decision on classes will be announced late this afternoon or early tomorrow morning. Taylor ISD and St Paul Child Development Center have announced they will be closed Tuesday.

(Dime Box)--The Lee County Sheriff's Office investigated a threat against Dime Box ISD by a juvenile after the Sheriff's Office was notified Thursday Night. Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger said he was made aware of a threat around 9:30 Thursday evening. Lee County Sheriff's Deputies and a Sergeant with the Criminal Investigations Division made contact with the involved juvenile and their parents. Investigators determined there was no basis to pursue criminal charges, and Dime Box ISD will handle the matter internally. Lee County Sheriff's Deputies and Precinct Four Constable Steve Pohorlesky were present for the start of school Friday.

(Cameron)--Cameron firemen were busy on Sunday evening. Firemen responded to a structure fire in the 700 block of County Road 221 just after 8 pm. That fire was put out quickly. Firemen then responded to a grassfire in the 6000 block of FM 1600 around 8:20 pm. Firemen had the fire under control quickly.

(Rockdale)--Monday is Martin Luther King Jr Day, a national holiday. Banks and Financial institutions will be closed. The Post Office will also be closed. Rockdale's Annual Martin Luther King Jr Day Parade will be held today at 1 pm, starting at Wolf Park. This year's Grand Marshal is Kerry Locklin, Quarterback of the 1976 State Champion Rockdale Tiger football team, a star athlete at New Mexico State, and a successful coach in college, the NFL and the Canadian Football League. The 20th Annual Greater Taylor Area Dr Martin Luther Kig Day March is underway today. The Celebration follows at the Taylor Public Library at 801 Vance.

(Central Texas)--Central Texas will continue to see cold temperatures as the Arctic cold front moves through the area. The high today will reach around 38 degrees, with the low about 20. On Monday, the high will only reach 39 degrees. Forecasters say Monday Night is the time to expect wintry precipitation. Snow showers are expected Monday Night, mainly after midnight. The National Weather Service says there's an 80 percent chance of snow, with about an inch of accumulation in the Central Texas area. The NWS forecast calls for about a 30 percent chance of snow showers before noon on Tuesday.

(Lee County)--The effort to slow down or stop the composting facility in Lee County has faced a setback. Recently, Lee County residents learned that they may not be able to stop the plans of "Break It Down LLC" to open a commercial composting facility in the Lincoln area--at least not yet. Over 1800 Lee County residents submitted letters of protest to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and and Republican State Representative Stan Gerdes support those opposing the plant. TCEQ Executive Director Kelly Keel sent Kolkhorst and Gerdes a letter saying the minimum requirement is notifcation by mail, which is what "Break It Down" said it did.

Rockdale's Annual Martin Luther King Jr Day parade will be Monday at 1 pm, starting at Wolf Park, going down Highway 79 to Sumuel park, with refreshments at the end of the parade. This year's Grand Marshal will be Kerry Locklin, Quarterback of the 1976 State Champion Rockdale Tiger Football team. The 20th Annual Greater Taylor area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day March will be held Monday Jan 20th starting at 9 am. Lineup will be from 8 to 8:30 am at the Dickey-Givens Community Center.

(Rockdale)--The Rockdale School Board will meet Wednesday Jan 22nd at 5 pm at the Rockdale ISD Conference Center at 1205 Murray.

(Rockdale)--In Sports, The Rockdale Lady Tiger Basketball team leaned on defense and only allowed one point scored against them on defense the entire 3rd quarter as the Lady Tigers beat the Lady Eagles 38 to 37 at Tiger Gym in Rockdale Friday Evening. Tanisha McBride led the Lady Tigers with 15 points. The Rockdale Tiger Boys saw a tremendous performance from Lexington standout out Brock Herring as he put up 37 points, including Six three pointers, as lexington beat Rockdale 68 to 51 at Tiger Gym Friday Evening. De'Andre Stephens led the Tigers with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals.

Ralph Joe Contreras, age 68, of Cameron, died on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at his home. Funeral services will be at 12 Noon on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. Burial will be at a later date. Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

George Bernard Wall, Sr., age 100, of The Woodlands, died on Monday, December 23, 2024.

(Rockdale)--Rockdale Junior High Students discovered an exciting surprise as they returned from the Winter Break. The brand new Junior High cafeteria had its grand opening at the start of the spring semester on Wednesday Jan 8th. The new cafeteria includes a number of enhancements to improve the function of the cafeteria as well as the student experience. The cafeteria features two serving lines, and a fully level floor making it entirely accessible for individuals with disabilities, and creating a larger more open seating area. Rockdale ISD Superintendent Dr. Denise Monzingo told KRXT that work on the bond construction project was proceeding during the Winter Break, and students would see changes as they returned to campus.

(Rockdale)--The Rockdale Junior High Basketball teams took on Rogers on Thursday. For the Junior High Boys, 7th Grade B lost to Rogers 22 to 10. Wyatt Servantes led the Tigers with 6 points. 7th Grade A lost 32 to 29. Robert Salcedo had 11 points. The Tiger 8th Grade B beat Rogers 23 to 21. Said Sierra had 8. The Tiger 8th Grade A beat Rogers 33 to 24. Hayze Hamrick had 10 points. For the Junior High Girls, Rockdale 7th Grade B tied Rogers, 0-0. Player of the game was Yoalee Prado. Rockdale 7th Grade A beat Rogers 20 to 9. Player of the game was Ariyana Salinas. Rockdale 8th Grade A beat Rogers 27 to 8. Player of the game was Makenzi Valdivia.

(Rockdale)--The Rockdale Girls Softball League will hold registration coming up. Registration will be held Saturday Jan 18th from 1 to 3 pm at Helen's Sno Ball on West Cameron in Rockdale. Registration will also be held Saturday Jan 25th at the same time and same place. February Registrations will be held from 1 to 4 pm at the softball fields on the following days: Saturday Feb. 1st, Saturday Feb 8th, and Saturday Feb. 15th.
