The world outside remains suspended in its distractions, yet I find solace in the gentle symphony of the night. The distant rumble of freight trains echoes like whispered secrets, rippling across the harbor from the port as they journey into the unknown.

I’m not quite sure what inspired me to write about Sunday mornings, those sacred pockets of time that invite reflection and contemplation. I should be running scales or, at the very least, noodling around on the fretboard, yet my guitar sits idle in the corner, watching me with a silent reminder of the discipline I’ve let slip. I search for melodies that dance just beyond my reach, feeling their potential in the air, yet all I can conjure is this profound introspection that envelops me like a warm blanket.

There’s an unmistakable magic that lingers in the air on these quiet mornings—a sense of pause, a fleeting moment where time seems to hold its breath. It reminds me of Kris Kristofferson's soulful musings, singing of restless souls and the inevitability of coming down to earth. Morrissey captures this sentiment beautifully, wishing that every day could embody that serene essence of Sunday; a time when lethargy and reflection waltz together in perfect harmony.

As I sit here, caught between the desire to create and the heavy cloak of contemplation, I can’t help but dream of a life steeped in the tranquility of Sundays, where the rush of the week fades away, and all that remains is the yearning for simplicity and the beauty of just being. Early morning Reflection on Thanksgiving

As you prepare to roast a succulent turkey, sear a tender salmon, or sauté that perfectly seasoned tofu today, turn up the music that fills your home with warmth and nostalgia. Let it resonate with memories of those we cherish—whether they are estranged, have moved on, or are simply far away. Every note played becomes a thread in the fabric of our shared experiences, reminding us of the precious times spent together. Today, I’ll be playing “Alice’s Restaurant,” and in that music, I will find a moment to reflect and express my gratitude.

As we embark on this season of thanksgiving, let’s pause to consider what Thanksgiving truly means to each of us. Song Story: "Surrounded By Love! "

As a songwriter, creating "Surrounded by Love" was a deeply personal journey for me, inspired by the universal struggles that we all face in life. I wanted to capture that feeling of waking up each day with the hope that today could be different, only to be met with the familiar chaos of our minds and lives. It’s a reminder that confusion and uncertainty are part of the human experience; we all stumble along our paths, feeling lost at times.

Throughout the writing process, I reflected on how easy it is to fall into the mundane rhythms of life—playing the “same old song” over and over again. This repetition isn’t just about the literal music we listen to; it’s a metaphor for the loops we find ourselves in, whether they’re thoughts, emotions, or patterns of behavior. I wanted to express that sense of disillusionment while also emphasizing a glimmer of hope.

The recurring line about being “surrounded by love” was crafted as a comforting mantra. I believe that love, in its many forms—friendship, family, romantic connection—serves as an anchor during turbulent times. These are the moments when we might feel most alone or detached from ourselves, yet love is always there, offering solace and strength.

The character of the woman in the song embodies a sense of wistfulness, allowing listeners to see how reflection on the past can mix with longing for a more joyful time. Through her, I wanted to convey that while it's natural to ponder those “better days,” we often overlook the love and support available to us in the present moment.

Ultimately, my goal was to weave a narrative that resonates with those moments of doubt and confusion while simultaneously uplifting listeners with the powerful reminder that we are indeed surrounded by love. It’s a song that invites connection—both with oneself and with others—and encourages us to embrace the beauty in life's complexities, knowing we’re never truly alone.

My First Grateful Dead Experience in Denver

I still vividly remember the first time I stepped into the magical realm of a Grateful Dead concert in Denver, Colorado. My friends Patty and Rich were buzzing with excitement, their eyes sparkling with anticipation as they assured me I was about to embark on an extraordinary journey—one that would leave an indelible mark on my soul.

As the lights dimmed and the crowd rippled with energy, I found myself surrounded by 17,000 fellow souls, all united in a kaleidoscope of rhythm and vibrancy. It felt as though we were part of something greater, a living tapestry woven together by the primal heartbeat of the drums, the hypnotic thump of the bass, and the ethereal notes of Jerry Garcia’s guitar. Each strum resonated within me, awakening feelings I didn’t even know existed.

The energy was palpable, an intoxicating blend of joy and liberation that transcended the mundane. People danced freely, their bodies moving in a euphoric celebration of life, love, and the music itself. There was no judgment, only a shared understanding of the counterculture that brought us all together.

As I learned of Phil Lesh's passing, the grief felt eerily reminiscent of the day we lost Jerry. It brought forth a deep, profound sadness that echoed within me, as if the music of my soul had lost its compass. But in that moment of sorrow, a comforting realization washed over me: Phil is now jamming with Jerry, sending light and love from beyond.

This wasn’t just a concert; it was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the beauty of community and the power of music to connect us all. As the night wore on all those years ago, I felt an unbreakable bond with everyone around me, each of us a note in the grand symphony of the Grateful Dead's legacy.

I know many of you, dear Deadheads, have your own incredible stories that reflect this unique phenomenon. I invite you to share your experiences—what this music and culture mean to you.
