Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse (also spelled Nyass or Inyass) was a prominent West African Islamic scholar and Sufi leader. He was born in 1900 in Kaolack, Senegal, and passed away in 1975. Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse was a leading figure in the Tijaniyya Sufi order, one of the most widespread and influential Sufi orders in West Africa. He was especially known for his spiritual leadership and scholarship, attracting followers from across Africa and beyond.

Here are some key aspects of his life:

# # # **Background**
- **Family and Education**: Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse came from a family of scholars. His father, Sheikh Abdullahi Niasse, was also a well-respected Islamic scholar, and Ibrahim received his early Islamic education under his father's guidance. He studied the Qur'an, Hadith, jurisprudence (fiqh), and Islamic mysticism (Sufism).

# # # **Role in the Tijaniyya Sufi Order**
- **Khalifa of Tijaniyya**: Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse declared himself the "Khalifa" of the Tijaniyya order in the 1920s. He claimed to have received the spiritual secrets of the order (known as "faydah"), which he believed were destined to spread through him to his followers. This gained him immense spiritual authority and established him as a leader within the order.

- **Massive Following**: His followers, known as the "Taalibe Baye" or "Disciples of Baye" (Baye being a title of endearment for him), grew rapidly. His influence extended throughout Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, and other parts of West Africa, as well as into North Africa and the Middle East.

# # # **Teachings and Legacy**
- **Teachings**: Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse emphasized the central role of love and devotion to God in Sufism. He taught that the ultimate goal of life is the direct experiential knowledge of God, often referred to in Sufi terms as "ma'rifah" (gnosis).

- **Education and Scholarship**: He was also a prolific writer and poet, producing numerous works on Islamic law, theology, and mysticism. His writings continue to be studied and revered by his followers.

- **Political and Social Influence**: Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse was known for his efforts to promote peace, unity, and Islamic values in his community. He also played a role in African political movements during the period of decolonization, working to bridge divides between Islamic and secular leaders.

# # # **Legacy**
After his death in 1975, his legacy continued through his descendants and followers, with many of his children and grandchildren becoming influential scholars and leaders in their own right. His spiritual teachings and the Tijaniyya order remain a major force in West African Islam today.

Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse is buried in Kaolack, Senegal, where his tomb has become a site of pilgrimage for his followers.

SALAH FOR LAST WEDNESDAY OF SAFAR

By: Imam Fakhruddin Owaisi (Servant of the Tijani Door)

As-Salam Alaykum dear beloved ones,
Many great Awliya-Allah have mentioned that an immense number of Bala'i (calamities) descend on Mankind on the last Wednesday of this
month of Safar.

Our Master Sayyidina Ahmad Tijani (رضي الله عنه) has also confirmed this.

There is also a special Salah that Sayyidina Shaykh (رضي الله عنه) would perform on this Wednesday to ward off these calamities (as mentioned by Sidi Shaykh Ahmad Sukayrij in the Jinayat al-Muntasib).

This Salah had been practiced by the Shaykh's descendants and by the special ones in his Tariqah for generations.

Shaykh-al-Islam Sahib-al-Faydah al-Haj Ibrahim Niasse (رضي الله عنه) has given permission to all his disciples to perform this prayer on the last Wednesday of Safar (as mentioned by Shaykh Abu-Bakr Atiq in Miftah al-Aghlaq).

Note that non-Tijani saints have also performed this Salah, but did not know about reciting the blessed Jawharat al-Kamal in the end (See the Jawahir al-Khams).

The Salah is performed with the intention of seeking Allah's Mercy in warding off the 360 (or 360,000) calamities that land on this day.

The Salah should be done on the morning of the last Wednesday of Safar (which would be the coming Wednesday), before Zuhr time.

This is how it is done:

1- You should perform a 4 Rakah prayer (like Zuhr or Asr). In each Rakah, you recite:
1 Fatihah
17 Kawthar
5 Ikhlas
1 Falaq and 1 Nas.

B- After finishing the Salah, you recite Ayah 21 from (Surah Yusuf) 360 times.

The Ayah is:"Wal'Lahu Ghalibun Ala Amrihi walakinna Akhthar an-Nasi La
Ya'lamun"

Read it 60 times first, then 300 times

C- Thereafter, recite the Jawharat al-Kamal 3 times, ending it the way we end the Wazifah (with Inna'Llaha…etc)

D- Make Dua for yourself and everyone.
Do note that the Prophet ﷺ was very ill in the month of Safar and he (prophet ﷺ) passed away from that illness.

Therefore, the month of Safar is a very difficult one for all believers, as we all carry his inheritance.

After it is the month of blessings for Mankind ﷺ, Rabi al-Awwal.

However, the night is the darkest before Sunrise, so understand!

Also note that the above-mentioned Salah is should only be mentioned to Sufis and those who believe in the Divinely-inspired sciences of the Sufis.

As for those who don't believe in the Awliya and their inspirations, we should not even mention this Salah to them. It is not something obligatory on all Muslims.

As Shaykh Al-islam al-haj Ibrahim (رضي الله عنه) said about some people who were denying his Maqam:

"من فاتنا، يكفيه أننا نفوته"
"Whoever misses us, it is enough (deprivation for him) that we will also
miss him".

May Allah protect us from all calamities. Amen.Was-Salam,

Share to benefits the brethren....

*Says Sheikh Ibrahim

"Awjada nii haqqan li jabril kasrii, fa inanii wakilu sirri sirri"

"I was made in reality to rectify the mistakes, because I am the deputy of the Secret of the Secret"

Commentary:
The Secret is the Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم and the Secret of the Secret is Sheikh Ahmad Tijani رضي الله عنه

His Elevated Status in the Muslim World.

Shaykh Ibrahim (رضي الله عنه) was known as a person of his knowledge throughout the Muslim world.

He was honored and distinguished in all kinds of Muslim countries, and visited almost all of them, as well as Muslim communities in other countries.

He met with the Muslim scholars of his time, and had mutually beneficial relationships with them.

One of the countries he visited the most was Saudi Arabia, where he made the pilgrimage to Allah’s Sacred House dozens of times. He also visited Cairo ten times.

He had strong connections to the heads of Al-Azhar University, such as Shaykh Mahmoud
Shaltut and Shaykh Dr. Abd al-Halim Mahmud, both former presidents of Al-Azhar.

The scholars of Al-Azhar honored him by giving him the title “Shaykh al-Islam.” It’s said that Shaykh Shaltut was the one who gave him this title.

They honored him another time by requesting him to lead the Jumu’ah prayer in Al-Azhar, in the month of Safar, 1381 AH (July 21, 1961), and he was the first black African to have this honor.

After the prayer, Shaykh
Muhammad al-Ghazali commented on Shaykh Ibrahim’s khutbah by saying, “We rest assured regarding the future of the Muslim world as long as there are the likes of our eminent guest Shaykh al-Islam Shaykh Ibrahim amongst the Muslims.”

AN EXCERPT FROM THE POETRY OF "THE VOYAGE OF THE HEART" BY THE POET OF THE PROPHET, SHEIKH IBRAHIM NIASS KAOLAKHI

So i departed from my land in Koalack in flight With (affectionate) love and faith attached

In Lagos (Nigeria) in Khurtoum (Sudan) at night while I was Like someone with longing which i would never showcase to anyone (but Muhammad)

I see myself by the Holy Mosque (in Makkah) but (for real) My goal is meeting the one who brought us the (manaasik) rituals (of hajj - Rasululah)

At Jeddah, by the Holy Mosque by the Zamzam (fountain) At mas'aa (spot of safaa and marwa) the (spirit of) Islam emerged overtly

At Taibah, what do you know about Taibah (Madinatil Nabbi)? It was where the entire (Prophetic) mission of the Hashimite (Prophet) got fulfilled

With your defeat of the misguided parties who came before us (kuffar of Quraish & Jews) Where (we learnt) you were dissipating, decimating and throwing them into destruction

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you (Rasululah) The proof of my love for you is more brighter than the sun

In verse 18:45, for example, worldly life is compared to the fall of rain and the cycle of vegetation:
"And strike for them a parable of the worldly life: it is like the water which we send down from the sky, and then the plants of the earth mingle with it. But then they become dry and broken and are scattered by the winds. And God is capable of all things."
