About 26 miles separate downtown Tallahassee from downtown Monticello. Drivers who opt for the scenic route will stay on U.S. 90 rather than keep on the interstate.

That trek of U.S. 90 is known around these parts as Mahan Drive, named after longtime Monticello resident Fred A. Mahan.

This week’s Tally Back Then focuses on Mahan, his love for plants and philanthropy, and his effort in the 1930s to beautify the highway that would eventually bear his name.

Cindy Littlejohn is a volunteer historian with Monticello’s Keystone Genealogical Library. She’s very familiar with Mahan and his lasting impact in the small town.

“Mr. Mahan moved here in 1910 and he passed away in 1960,” she told WCTV. “He spent a good fifty years as a wonderful citizen of Jefferson County and Monticello.”
