(6)

It is here to inform, enrich, inspire, and uplift families. Each issue highlights a few local families that strive to enrich, inspire or uplift the community around them. To INFORM: we strive to include at least one article that would be of worth to EVERY family in Tallahassee, as well as helpful resources from shopping and home services to family outings. To ENRICH: is to help our local Tallahass

ee residents learn and improve their lives. We bring in guest writers to help us all know a little more about the complexity of raising a family. To INSPIRE: Often we just need a little push to do what we need to do to better our lives. Tallahassee Family Magazine hopes to inspire you and your family to be a little better and help your own home and your own community to be a better place. And lastly, to UPLIFT: Every issue includes personal interest stories on local families. What better way to uplift than to hear about someone in your own community doing something to life better for more people.

The Christmas Menorah

“It was December 26, 2006, and the b***y of the previous day was still piled on the living room couch. After an unseasonably balmy Christmas Day, something of a winter chill had finally descended on Tallahassee. We were cleaning up the yuletide detritus – my husband, Sean, vacuuming up Christmas tree needles, Omie pulling out the skirt beneath the tree to shake outside — when Omie gasped in surprise.”

Warm up for the holiday with Mayan Hot Chocolate

“This decadent hot chocolate, inspired by the recipe that brought a smile to the cranky Judi Dench in Chocolat, is rich with a kick that is worth experiencing if you’ve never tried it. When the whirlwind of the holidays gets to be too much, make your way into the kitchen and let the aromas of chocolate and cinnamon bring you back to what the holidays are all about. Love, hearth and home.”

Safe Holidays for our Furry Companions

“Holiday decorations and plants look interesting to our furry family, too. Strings, buckles, bangles and beads are shiny and smell like their favorite people; cats love to bat ornaments off the Christmas tree, but broken glass cuts little paws; and holiday candles burn off cats’ whiskers. Any pet that eats string or ribbon usually results in an emergency situation.”

Christmas Tree Safety

“If your Christmas tree becomes involved in a fire, you are losing not only your gifts under the tree but possibly your entire home or even your family. Each year, fire departments respond to an average of 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees. Carefully decorating Christmas trees can help make your holidays safer.”

The City of Tallahassee Fire Department wants you to follow these guidelines while enjoying your holiday.

The Loss of a Pet: Tips on How To Handle Your Pet’s Death With Your Child

“Tell the truth and be honest. Pick a place where your child will feel comfortable and you can talk to them with little distraction. Try to imagine how you’re going to tell them ahead of time. Children respond in a variety of ways; therefore, keep what you say to a minimum and wait to see if they ask for more information.”

An Equal Playing Field

Team sports promote socialization. It’s on a field or court or rink where individuals blend into one group for the shared intent of playing a game. Sports also foster health, regardless of skill level or competitive drive. In Tallahassee, a newly established club has coupled the social and healthful benefits of team athletics to create a supportive, all-inclusive playing field. They are known as TGAA.

The Tallahassee Gay Athletic Association became a domestic, nonprofit organization in May 2017. Their mission is to support and connect the le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, or q***r (LGBTQ) community and friends of the community by showing up every Sunday to play sports.
