How many musicians does it take to move a 9 foot, 1200 lb vintage recording console? Only one if you are aka Joe Filkins. The other 4 of us mostly watched except for a few key moments.

Can you tell which moment almost gave me a heart attack? Joe asked me to tell him the value of the console only after it reached the final destination.

And for those who are wondering: no we are not at all done with construction. The console is going in now because it’s too big for any door and we need to plug up the previous garage door now. Joe has plans to build an airtight sarcophagus around it to keep out the dust.

I’m well aware this is far too long for a social media post. But I wanted to document a moment we’ve been planning since September last year. Earwig Tacoma, here we come!

New console moving day tomorrow! 🤩 Rented a forklift and car trailer to get it out of my garage and into the new studio. The Sphere Eclipse C is a 40-channel analog beast!

Floors, walls & doors comin in hot 🚪🔥🎤. Progress is really picking up at Earwig Tacoma! Picture 3 shows a 900 lb crate holding the 3 “isolation” doors. Insanely heavy!

After months of planning and revisions, the City of Tacoma approved our plans and issued a permit today. ITS ON PEOPLE! 🎉🥳👏🎊

Earwig’s Space Echo RE-201

The Space Echo just rules…all by itself!

Any speaker cabinet can be used as a microphone 🎤. To prove my point, I stuck a guitar 4x12 cabinet in front of a kick drum, ran it through a cheap direct box and into pro tools. 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤 Speakers are made of the same basic building blocks as a dynamic microphone. Just much bigger and with heavier materials. Sure, they aren’t the best mics, but they can be used for cool new sounds. In fact I use something similar in front of a kick drum on every session. It captures low frequencies very well! #earwigtips #earwigstudio
