Trauger steam engine tractors to be on display at Old Trusty—Two special steam engine tractors will be on display at this year’s Old Trusty event Sept. 7-8, as the Trauger family of rural Exeter has loaned a 1915 Case and a 1920 Port Heron to OT organizers.The tractors come from a long-standing collection, started by Robert and Shirley Trauger, who resided on the family homestead, established in 1880.

Harvard Museum plans for open house, making progress—Harvard’s Historical Society is breathing new life into the former Apfel Funeral Home with its newly-developed museum. Updates on the building began at the end of May, and since then a lot of work has been done.

Sutton youth football to begin season Sunday—The Sutton Junior Mustangs football team is set to begin their 2024 football season Sunday, Aug. 25, on the road taking on Nuckolls County to open South Division play for the squad. New this year is the addition of a spirit squad, coached by Sheila Hajny, and assistant coaches Jentry Stenger and Briley Griess.

Mosquito numbers in Nebraska jumped this summer; it’s likely going to get worse in the future—Bob Decker thought he’d get an early start on golf one morning this summer when he headed to Omaha’s Steve Hogan Golf Course.Instead, he ended up providing swarms of mosquitoes their breakfast, lunch, and dinner during his round at the nine-hole course.“I was slapping mosquitoes off my legs the whole time,” he said. “Thus the reason for my poor score …”Decker wasn’t imagining things. Compared to last year, mosquito numbers have jumped significantly across Nebraska, nearly doubling in mid-July.

The history of J.I. Case—J.I. Case tractors and equipment, as well as Galloway engines will be the spotlight of Old Trusty Sept. 7-8. This featured tractor can be seen with other makes and models at the annual event, which opens at 8 a.m., Saturday, ending at 8 p.m., and begins at 8 a.m., Sunday, ending at 5 p.m.Jerome Increase Case was born in Williamstown, NY on Dec. 11, 1819.His small start would turn out to leave a big legacy in the farming community, serving as the founder of J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co and J.I. Case Plow Works.

Youth participate in Clay County Ext. leadership conference—The Clay County Extension Office hosted a Leadership Conference for Clay County Middle School youth. Ten youth from all four county schools participated.

Triple F Festival is Saturday—Triple F Festival begins early Saturday, Aug. 17, with city-wide garage sales beginning at 7 a.m., and going until 1 p.m. A map of the available garage sales can be found on the Fairfield Community Club’s page.

S-41 team competes at SCTP NTLs—Seven athletes from the S-41 team traveled with five adult sponsors to the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships from July 11-17, in Marengo, OH.More than 4,000 participating athletes attended the 10-day event. The S-41 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team was formed just after the youth Cornhusker Trap Shoot May 2-4.

Prairie strips valuable to conservation efforts, change of practice in low-yielding fields—During the South Central Agriculture Lab (SCAL) Field Day Aug. 8, Ron Seymour, a UNL Extension educator in Hastings, presented on prairie strips and their value to growing fields. As not all fields yield the same, with variation due to soil type, w**d pressure, and irrigation, among other reasons, it’s good to change the practices of the lower-yielding acres, instead of continuing to plant crops. A prairie strip is a conservation practice that protects soil and water while providing habitat for wildlife.

Angus once home to auto company—In the early 1900s, Angus was home to the Angus Automobile Factory, known for manufacturing the Fuller car. The only one known to still exist sits in the Nuckolls County Museum in Superior.Bob Reinke, a local expert from Deshler and author of “The Fuller,” has researched and compiled a lot of the factory and car’s history.“There’s hardly any cars in Nebraska that they built that many,” Reinke said. “The Patriot truck was built here and they built a lot of those in Lincoln but in a small town in Nebraska, it’s probably the only car they built over 100 of.”

Deweese Festival begins Saturday with tractor pull—Deweese’s annual festival will begin this weekend with the annual Dave Babcock Memorial Antique Tractor Pull at 11 a.m., Aug. 10.Weigh-in starts at 10 a.m.; participants will be pulling with the Little Red Sled. Concessions will be available throughout the event. For more details and questions, contact Evan Hansen at 402-469-1695.Sunday’s event, the Keith Hansen Memorial Demolition Derby, will begin at 2 p.m.

SCH capital campaign continues to grow;donations, pledges near $1.2 million—Following the initial capital campaign kickoff event at the Fox Hollow Golf Course in late May, which hosted nearly 80 guests, the Sutton Community Home Foundation, Sutton Community Home Board of Directors,and the SCH administration and staff are pleased to announce that to date, a total of nearly $1.2 million has been raised in an effort to start the construction and renovation project for the Sutton skilled nursing care center. In all, the campaign volunteers have been tasked to raise $5.5 million to help fund the four-phase renovation and enhancement project, which is being managed by the Lincoln architectural firm, arCuretecture, the firm’s construction manager Jeff Ahl, and the Sutton Community Home project manager, Clay Center native, Tiffany Schweer.

Goodwill DDS presents plaque to Schmoldt, CC Pool Aug. 1—The Goodwill Developmental Disability Services group presented a Community Partnership Award plaque to Deb Schmoldt and the Clay Center Pool, Aug. 1. Schmoldt is the manager of the pool. Officially presenting her with the plaque is Jenifer Phinney, program manager at Goodwill, as well as members of the DDS group.

Clay Co. Health Department celebrating 50 years Aug. 8—The Clay County Health Department will be celebrating 50 years on Aug. 8. The celebration and a complimentary lunch will go from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Clay County Senior Center (118 S. Alexander, Clay Center). Visit the health department, located at 202 W Fairfield Street in Clay Center, to get a complimentary meal ticket.

Crooked Creek Golf Course hosts Cattail Calcutta July 27-28—Thirty-six teams entered the Clay Center Crooked Creek Golf Course’s fifth annual Cattail Calcutta July 27-28.The tournament was born out of COVID by John Reed and Andrew Malone, in 2020, after the two saw a need for a tournament that year.The first Cattail came together in about 20 days.In the two-day Cattail, teams of two shot 36 holes—18 each day; 36 teams is the highest amount of teams entered in the tournament so far.

This is Sandy Creek's 1st playoff win since a 26-14 second round win over East Butler in 2003. They beat the Mavericks 24-18!!
Sandy Creek has quite the crowd here at the first round of playoffs. We head into the second quarter with SC leading 8-0!

Nebraska 3rd District Congressman, Adrian Smith, and his Constituent Services Director, Alex Straatmann, visited with Cole and Dayna Schelkopf Friday morning at their Blue Valley Aquaculture operation. The Schelkopf's discussed their aquaculture operation, and how it has transitioned from a food provider to their current operation, where they sell and deliver rainbow trout that they raise for recreational use. Schelkopf transports live trout to Colorado and Kansas, as well as supplying some Nebraska private landowners. Stay tuned for more information from the visit in next week's Clay County News.
