**First hijab-wearing Muslim law enforcement officer sworn in in Georgia**
CAIR-Georgia would like to announce the induction of the first hijab-wearing Muslim woman in a Police Department in the state of Georgia. Sister Maryam Mohammed was sworn into the Union City Police Department on October 9, 2020.
Sister Maryam overcame an unstable childhood, found Islam, and completed her high school education as an adult. The encouragement of her husband and the pursuit of her childhood dream led her to earn a dual associate's degree in crime scene investigation and a bachelor’s degree in criminology, and leadership. During her studies, she also attended the National Forensic Academy.
CAIR-Georgia recognizes the inherently problematic history of the police force in the U.S. that began from slave patrols and evolved to a militarized tool to control Black and Brown bodies with racist policies. However, we are encouraged to see that with the barriers that Sister Maryam has broken, the Union City Police Force will be more representative of the diverse communities they serve. We hope and pray that sister Maryam is able to serve as a catalyst for change.
