SOUTHERN : In July 2021, after years of searching for the perfect location, play- wright, Brad Erickson and his husband, Brian Protheroe, a leadership development consultant, purchased 516 Central Avenue, in Summerville with the intent of establishing South Porch Artists Residency. A year later, in August, they opened their doors and have had a steady influx of artist residents.

SOUTHERN : When he decided to try his hand at building a bamboo fly rod of his own, little did Bill Oyster know that he had cast into a circle of dreams, and its ripples would carry his family into a future they could not imagine possible. “I didn’t set out to make the best bamboo fly rod ever. I just wanted to make the best one I could make for myself.” Fate, however, had different plans.

LIFE & CULTURE : Shortly after Barrett began photographing the denizens of Huntington Beach State Park, he began to notice that everyone else was photographing the same things that he was. The ubiquitous imagery of wading birds and marsh grasses made his new hobby feel less satisfying, so he enrolled in visual arts classes at Coastal Carolina University to learn more and branch out.

Set on a raised-brick foundation and topped with a tin, gabled roof, the balustraded five-bay porch and balcony across its front façade gave way to a wide, transomed, and side-lit entrance. Though the family may not have realized it then, their white frame structure would represent a new day for Summerville. St. Paul’s Church located in Summerville is known as the town’s second oldest congregation. It was originally formed in 1717 and previously named St. George’s Parish Church in what was known as the Dorchester settlement. In 1855 St. Paul’s in Summerville became incorporated and acquired the remains of St. George’s Church. The current building we see today was built in 1857, replacing the original! Ashley River Park has fun for the whole family! The walking trails are beautiful with lots of shade and wildlife. The playgrounds have something for all ages and the splash pad is now open!
