HOPKINS COUNTY – On Saturday, just after 4:00 p.m., Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 6000 block of FM 2297.

Upon arrival, DPS officers identified Ricardo Chavez as the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash. While speaking with Chavez, officers detected the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Chavez admitted to consuming three beers prior to the crash.

Sulphur Springs officers were dispatched to the 300 block of W. Beckham Street in response to a reported break-in at a residence during the night. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the homeowner, who explained that the house was undergoing remodeling. The homeowner stated she had visited the property to check on the remodeling progress when workers informed her that tools had been stolen from inside the residence overnight.

While inspecting the home, the homeowner discovered a wallet left behind by the suspect, containing an identification card. She recognized the individual in the ID photo as someone she had seen across the street at an abandoned house, where she believed he had been staying. The officers were provided with the identification and immediately recognized the suspect, identified as Jose Galvan Jr.

The officer then went to the abandoned house across the street and found the door open. After clearing the residence, it appeared someone had indeed been staying there. The homeowner of the abandoned property was contacted and requested that a criminal trespass warning be issued to Galvan Jr. if located.

Officers began searching the area and received information from workers that Galvan Jr. had been seen earlier leaving on a bicycle. He was eventually located riding a bicycle near Lamar and Ross Streets, close to both the residence where the tools were stolen and the abandoned house.

Upon making contact with Galvan Jr., officers asked if he had anything illegal on him and questioned him about the stolen tools. During the interaction, Galvan Jr. admitted to having a "pipe" in his jacket pocket. A search revealed three syringes and a glass pipe. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was booked on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia.

A separate case is being filed for burglary of a building related to the stolen tools.

Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

Hopkins County, TX – On December 13, 2024, a routine traffic stop conducted by Cpl. Zack Steward of the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office led to the arrest of a man in possession of m**hamphetamines.

The incident occurred at the EZ Mart located on Helm Lane when Cpl. Steward observed a red Ford truck enter the parking lot without a visible registration sticker. After running a records check, it was confirmed that the vehicle displayed expired license plates. Acting on this information, Cpl. Steward initiated a traffic stop.

Approaching the vehicle, Cpl. Steward encountered the driver, identified as Freddy Laureana-Guzman. Due to a language barrier, Cpl. Steward requested assistance from a Spanish-speaking officer through the Communications unit. While waiting for additional support, Cpl. Steward asked Laureana-Guzman to produce his wallet for identification.

During this interaction, Cpl. Steward noticed a rolled-up piece of paper inside the wallet. Drawing on his training and experience, Cpl. Steward suspected that the driver might be in possession of illegal contraband. Laureana-Guzman was asked to exit the vehicle, and the wallet was secured for further inspection.

Upon unrolling the paper, Cpl. Steward discovered a plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance. Subsequent testing confirmed the substance was m**hamphetamine, weighing approximately 1.30 grams, including the packaging. Laureana-Guzman was immediately placed in handcuffs and taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle revealed no additional contraband. Laureana-Guzman was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was released to jail staff. The evidence was later processed in the patrol room and officially documented.

This case highlights the importance of routine traffic enforcement in identifying and addressing criminal activity. Laureana-Guzman now faces charges of POSS CS PG 1/1-B >=1G
