Here's an excerpt from the WJ Book that includes a relevant note as the NHRA Pro Stock tour heads to Maple Grove Raceway:

That first season of Kurt's Pro Stock driving career, the two went to battle in the money round six times, with father hoisting the trophy on four of those occasions. Notably, NHRA Rookie of the Year KJ finished second in the Pro Stock points to WJ, thereby etching another note in the history book as the first father and son to do so.

The two raced in a total of 13 final rounds against one another between 1993 and 2001 at a variety of racetracks across the country. Location didn't seem to matter much when it came to a particular facility's likelihood of hosting their father-son duel; the only track with repeat Johnson vs. Johnson finals was venerable Maple Grove in Reading, Pa.

- just a regular old photo from a regular old living room with a regular old picture on the wall. That wheelie photo was shot by both the Minneapolis Star and John Foster Jr. at Minnesota Dragways in 1971.

There's a pretty good description of how and why it occurred in the book, and you can pick it up here: https://bit.ly/WJBookCarTech

A little (in a race shop doing racecar things not too long ago) compared to a little now (preparing to make a dyno run at WJE).

The older photo is from the book, which you can order directly from CarTech Books here: https://bit.ly/WJBookCarTech

Our longtime friend Chris Haverly sent over these photos. As best we can tell (thanks to the hat), it's from a WJ win in Memphis in either 1991 or 1992. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend!

Here's that 6-second run and the original story, thanks to National Dragster and NHRA for sharing it.

May 20, 1994, Summernationals in Englishtown, N.J.
KJ records a 6.988, the first sub-7 second pass in NHRA Pro Stock history. 26 years ago today with that Warren Johnson-horsepower!

"We'd made a terrible run the first session, but I was confident with what we had under the hood. I knew that if I got off to a good start and made a clean pass, there was a chance," said Kurt, who was wheeling an Olds Cutlass at the time. "The session took about 40 minutes, but I waited until the end, until the air got absolutely the best it could get. When I let the clutch out, it had the wheels in the air, and it was a smooth run. It was absolutely flawless. Everybody was pitching their best, but I was the lucky one there."
