Shaun Shiller Fequiere was born in Brooklyn, NY on Aug.10, 1966, Growing up in East Flatbush, Shaun was the 2nd of 5 boys born to hardworking Haitian immigrants. By the time he enrolled in Wingate HS, Shaun started wearing the B-Boy style Kangol spitfire hat which led to his nickname The “Kangol Kid” and in later years, simply “Kangol”, He would go on to take the world by storm: first with his friend and dance partner Doctor Ice as the first dancers for a rap group (Whodini), and later as one of the founding members of UTFO. More than merely another entertainer, Kangol was also a mentor to young artists, a renowned producer and song-writer, and most importantly, a father.
In February of 2021, Kangol found himself in his own battle against colon cancer. Still ever the shining light and example for others, Kangol used his own story very publicly, to educate others on the need for regular screenings and early detection. He spared no feelings nor descriptions during interviews and on his various social media platforms, to graphically share the intimate details of his fight, in hopes of saving others from suffering the same fate.
On December 18, 2021 at 3:02 am, Kangol was called home to eternal rest with his heavenly father, after a valiant 10-month battle, passing peacefully at North Shore University Hospital. He was 55 years old. Kangol is survived by his parents Andre and Jeanne, 3 brothers Joel, Alix and Andy, 4 Children Shaun, Andre, Giovanni, and Amancia, and 6 grandchildren.
