Have you seen your first Monarch of the year???

I have been looking but not yet for me! I have seen Cabbage Whites, Sulfers, Admirals, Blue Azules, and Swallowtails...but not a Monarch...

Nina said her and Vicky saw a few last week while weeding the gardens.

Today our volunteer, Fred Centko, sent in a picture of a Monarch on his Common Milkweed!!!

Today is National Prairie Day! Illinois, nicknamed The Prairie State, actually only has roughly 2500 acres of original, ancient prairie from our 36 million acres 250 years ago.

More than half of this acreage is permanently protected as Illinois Nature Preserves or Land & Water Reserves.

These sites preserve the flatter, black-soil prairies, sand prairies, hill prairies, gravel prairies and more.

With numerous species of milkweeds and abundant flowers our remaining prairie is some of our most important pollinator and Monarch habitat.

Our remaining prairie is under extreme pressure from climate change, invasive species, decades of fire absence, fragmentation, and development in the case of unprotected prairie.

Would you resolve today to donate just two days per year to helping steward a prairie? And a donation to one of many groups caring for prairies? We need YOU. And Illinois Prairie needs you! Step up Illinoisans for your land!
