Recent COVID spike prompts Red Dirt Relief Fund to launch new COVID Crisis grant program for Oklahoma music professionals

January 21, 2022--Tulsa, Okla.—The nonprofit Red Dirt Relief Fund is launching a new COVID Crisis grant program to provide up to $500 per household on a first-come, first-served basis to Oklahoma music professionals who have lost $1,000 or more in missed work due to COVID illness or cancellations since December 1, 2021; face immediate housing, food, medical or transportation insecurity; and worked in the music business for the past 5 years. People who meet these criteria can apply here: https://forms.gle/hKWKH1D8rQsWrPr17

According to Executive Director Katie Dale, “With the recent spike in the omicron variant, we’re hearing from many musicians who are vaccinated and boosted that they still contracted COVID, which forces a quarantine of at least 5 days. That can result in a significant financial loss in missed gig work, especially for music professionals who haven’t fully recovered from years-long pandemic impacts. We are committing $50,000 to launch this program, and welcome donations to extend that amount as the need will likely exceed it.”

This is the third COVID grant program the nonprofit has offered since March of 2020, thus far resulting in $279,250 in emergency aid distributed to more than 850 music professionals statewide. Previous grantees include members of the Tulsa Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, award-winning singer songwriters, renowned hip hop artists, worship musicians, teachers and music professionals who have played or worked Cain’s Ballroom, Chesapeake Arena, Tulsa PAC, Tower Theater and more.

Red Dirt Relief Fund was founded in 2012 to provide a safety net of critical assistance for Oklahoma music people. To date, the organization has granted $563,475 in aid to music professionals in need.

Bob Childers’ Gypsy Café: Live from the Farm Celebrates 10th Year
Oklahoma’s Largest Roots Songwriter Fest will stream for free May 12 at 7pm
April 20, 2021—Bob Childers’ Gypsy Café, Oklahoma’s largest homegrown songwriter festival now in its tenth year, will be filmed live in the Gypsy Café at the birthplace of Red Dirt Music, The Farm in Stillwater, Okla. The show will stream for free at ocollytv.com on May 12 at 7:00pm. The event benefits Oklahoma artists in need through the Red Dirt Relief Fund.
The festival lineup that usually includes more than 60 Oklahoma songwriters has been condensed for time to include performances by Mike McClure, Kaitlin Butts, John Fullbright, Red Dirt Rangers, Mike Hosty, Ken Pomeroy, Bo Phillips, Monica Taylor, Chuck Dunlap, Jacob Tovar, Buffalo Rogers, Greg Jacobs as well as a special performance from the Byron Berline Band to honor this year’s Restless Spirit Award honoree, the late Jim Paul Blair. The broadcast will also include the winning song from the Jimmy LaFave Songwriting Contest, “Hope & Gasoline” by Ahna Jennings.
“We really hoped we could host our tenth year of this festival with a full audience, but the health and safety of our artists and fans is always top priority,” said Red Dirt Relief Fund Executive Director Katie Dale. “On the bright side, we were able to restore the Gypsy Café, a small outbuilding where picking circles and musician gatherings have taken place since the beginning at the Farm. So we’re bringing this event back to its roots and filming a live show that people can watch around the world.”
The show will premiere for free thanks to support from sponsors including Grand Casino, The Collaborative Tulsa, Tito’s Handmande Vodka, Oklahoma Film + Music Office, White Claw and Coors Light. Red Dirt Relief Fund will be accepting donations for their financial assistance fund at reddirtrelieffund.org/donate, PayPal.me/RDRF and by selling festival merchandise through Ida Red General Sto

Up to $272,000 in COVID grants given to musicians in need like this one:

Covid hit my household hard. From loss of income to a family member that became very ill. Even with the efforts of the government and stimulus, it was not enough. I came across this page and saw light at the end of the tunnel. I applied for the grant and crossed my fingers. Today I was counting change to put gas in my car when the grant was approved and came through at that very moment. It is even more comforting to me knowing that music did this. A love for music shared by so many and the support of a community of music lovers and musicians reaching out and virtually helping us and telling us "it's going to be ok", means more to me than you'll ever know. Hopefully there will be a day that I can give back and give hope to a musician just like you did for me today.
