Staunton Makerspace

Staunton Makerspace The Makerspace is non-profit organization focusing on innovation, collaboration, and creativity. We hope to establish a location in Downtown Staunton.

We ensure affordable tools, training, and resources are available to the community for personal growth, career advancement and entrepreneurship. "Makerspaces typically provide access to materials, tools, and technologies to allow for hands-on exploration and participatory learning. They are occasionally referred to as fablabs, hackerspaces or tech shops." -- oedb.org/ilibrarian/a-librarians-guide-

to-makerspaces/

I tend of think of MakerSpaces are modern libraries where you can get hands-on access to technology that is not widely available, such as 3D printers and Computer controlled Routers. It's also a place to get access to people with real expertise in electonics, manufacturing, art, and programming. A delightful collision of skills and expertise that could help us experiment successfully. We are working to establish (and would welcome contact from) local educational groups and organizations.

Take a look at this beauty! Thanks to Susan Monieu for donating a Grizzly wood planer to the Makerspace! With newly replaced cutterhead blades, we are able to plane boards on site, increasing accessibility to members of the community who might not be able to afford having a wood planner at home. By donating to the makerspace, you’re investing in people, ideas, and a future filled with innovation, creativity, and collaboration. Thank you!

Meet Jacob! Jacob is currently attending Blue Ridge Community College in Computer Science and works at Advance Agra service. Jacob says that he joined the makerspace to meet people with similar interests who like to figure things out. Interesting things about Jacob are that he has obtained his private pilots license, has a CDL, and has his A&P (Airframe & Powerplant) mechanic license in Aviation Maintenance. Meet new member Tatiana! Tatiana moved to Virginia to be closer to her dad who is a spry 96 years old, after living in Maine and New Hampshire. Tatiana was born in Japan and lived all over the world growing up, graduating from high school in Indonesia because her dad was a diplomat. Tatiana is enjoying life at the makerspace after retiring from the federal government in public relations. Tatiana says she likes the atmosphere at the makerspace because she likes the opportunity to learn new things with great people! Tatiana is a member of the pottery guild and the Sunday pottery club at the makerspace.

Meet new member Bob! Bob retired as a government contractor about a year ago and has been attending school to learn his second career of making and restoring furniture. Bob graduated from the University of Alabama and Case Western Reserve University in Physics. Interesting fact about Bob is that he was previously involved in founding and running a makerspace in Huntsville, Alabama where he relocated from about 10 years ago. Bob joined the digital graphics guild today where he is interested in using vinyl to make graphics. Bob said he looked at multiple makerspaces and was impressed by the Staunton Makerspace because of the amount of equipment and resources available for everyone to use.
