JUDGE NOT
Background Scripture (John 8:1-11,39-59)
Lesson Passage (John 8:1-11,56-59)
UNIFYING TOPIC
• Jesus Extends Forgiveness
LESSON TEXT
• The Perfect Response (John 8:1-11)
• Greater Than Abraham (John 8:56-59)
THE MAIN THOUGHT
• She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. (John 8:11 KJV)
UNIFYING PRINCIPLE• Others maybe quick to judge someone who breaks the law-whether moral, ethical or civil.
• Who has authority to enact judgment on another person's wrongdoing?
• After confronting her accusers with their own sinfulness, Jesus forgives the woman caught in adultery, saying "Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.
LESSON AIM
• To increase our understanding of forgiveness as the best expression of love in our relationship with each other.
LIFE AIM
We are to do better, once we learn better, changing behavior.
• What is the true meaning of forgiveness?
• Forgiveness means different things to different people.
• But in general, it involves an intentional decision to let go of resentment and anger.
• The act that hurt or offended you might always be with you.
• But working on forgiveness can lessen that act's grip on you.
• The Bible teaches that unselfish love is the basis for true forgiveness, since “it keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Corinthians 13:5).
• Forgiving others means letting go of resentment and giving up any claim to be compensated for the hurt or loss we have suffered.
• Forgiveness involves willfully putting aside feelings of resentment toward someone who has committed a wrong, been unfair or hurtful, or otherwise harmed you in some way.
• Forgiveness is not merely accepting what happened or ceasing to be angry.
• Forgiveness doesn't mean that you have to accept what happened or stop being angry.
• It also doesn't mean that you have to reconcile with the person who harmed you or accept their harmful behaviors.
Let's compare God's forgiveness to human forgiveness! What's the difference?
• God's forgiveness is conditional, and it requires repentance.
• God's forgiveness is a gift that can be received through faith in Jesus Christ.
• God's forgiveness is based on the atoning death of Jesus Christ, who bore the sins of humanity.
• Human forgiveness is defined as a conscious decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward someone who has harmed you.
• Forgiveness is not optional, it's mandatory
• According to Matthew 6:14-15, if you forgive others, God will also forgive you.
• However, if you do not forgive others, God will not forgive you.
• Some say that it is possible that people perceive that God forgives them because they forgive others.
• Others say that people may forgive because they perceive that God forgives them.
• Unlike a human being, God does not hold grudges or need time before He will forgive you.
• Forgiveness causes us to weigh someone’s sinful action or attitude with love, wisdom, and discernment and choose not to respond.
• Scripture uses various words for this quality: patience, longsuffering, endurance, and, of course, forbearance (see Proverbs 12:16; 19:11; 1 Peter 4:8).
• Forgiveness is also not forgetting. God does not suffer from amnesia about our sin. He remembers very clearly; however, it is not a remembering to condemn us (Romans 8:1).
• You can have forgiveness right now: Confess that you have sinned, and ask for God to forgive you. It's that simple.
GOD'S WORD IN LIFE
• The surface theme of this lesson is about judgment. However, beneath the surface, it's about something more, LOVE OVER LAW.
• " With the most powerful statement in the passage, " he who is without among you, let him throw a stone at first.
• Jesus demonstrated Love's superiority.
• When Jesus was asked whether or not the woman should be stone, was a test of His faithfulness to the Law.
• His response, however, demonstrated a commitment to Love.
• Jesus' invitation for those who were without sin to
throw the first stone resulted in convicted hearts, changed perspectives, and an appreciation for grace.
• Like the stones, they left behind the importance of compliance to the Law, which in that moment was thrown to the side and discarded.
