School will resume tomorrow in Lincoln County with a heightened security presence in light of the manhunt continuing in Laurel County for the I-75 shooter.

Lincoln County Schools will resume normal school operations tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10th, with heightened security precautions being implemented on all campuses. The district has worked diligently with local law enforcement and our SROs and will continue to do so moving forward as more information is available.

After school activities will be permitted to resume this afternoon. Law enforcement will be providing extra security and patrolling as needed.

ℹ️ Full statement from Stanford Police Department:

On Sunday evening, the Stanford Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Emergency Management and other agencies, were actively involved in assessing and addressing multiple concerns across the county.

After gathering more information, looking further into the incidents, and consistently communicating with and monitoring situations in other counties, we are confident that there are currently no credible threats or any activities of serious concern that would impact the normal safety of our community.

Over the weekend, we were in regular communication with the school system and fully supported their decision to cancel classes on Monday. This proactive measure allowed us to complete our assessments and we commend the schools for their caution and commitment to the well-being of our community.

We have worked diligently alongside our community partners to ensure all potential risks were carefully examined. Based on the information gathered and continuous monitoring of the situation, at this time, we do not believe there to be any reason for our schools to delay returning to normal operations.

As always, the safety of our residents is our top priority. We will continue to monitor all situations closely and respond swiftly to any new developments. School Resource Officers (SROs) will be present on school grounds as usual, and additional personnel from SPD and LCSO will also conduct patrols throughout the week as an added security measure.

Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no school tomorrow in Lincoln County.

Investigators stated tonight that they believe the I-75 shooter is still somewhere in the heavily forested area around the ridge where the shooting took place near Exit 49 in Laurel County.

There is nothing to lead anyone to believe the shooter has traveled to our area but after Rockcastle and Laurel County schools closed, many neighboring counties followed.

See the post below for Lincoln County schools.

🚨 Student and staff safety is our number one priority. Therefore, school is canceled for tomorrow, Monday, September 9th, in response to the situation that took place in Laurel County last night.

This will not be an NTI day.

Final from Centre College

Lincoln County 42
Danville 0

Our InterCounty Energy Lineman is Tucker Julian.

The Guardian Exterminating and B-Green Lawn Care Player of the Game is Damon Spigle.

Danville wore purple jerseys in honor of the now-closed segregated Bate High School. The Admirals won the coin toss and chose to receive. A good kick by Brody Baker and good coverage by the kick team pinned Danville at their own 14-yard line. Danville got a first down and moved the all out to the 28-yard line where they stalled and punted.

After no return on the punt, Tucker Foster connected on a 33-yard play action pass to Kash Smith. That was followed by a six-yard run by Damon Spigle, seven-yard run by Smith, two-yard run by Smith, and then a ten-yard jet sweep pass to Smith. Then, on first and goal from the nine-yard line, Bob Floyd took an end-around the distance for the first score of the night. Colby Townes added the kick and Lincoln County led 7-0.

The Patriots attempted an on-side kick after the score, but touched the ball before it went required ten yards. Danville took over with good field position at the Lincoln County 49-yard line. They were able to pick up two yards on four plays and turned it over on downs at the Lincoln County 47-yard line.

The Patriots picked up a first down on an eleven-yard pass from Foster to Floyd. Then, moved the chains again on a nine-yard keeper by Foster. Two plays later, the Patriots found the end zone on an 18-yard pass from Foster to Bradley Cole. Towne made the PAT and Lincoln County led 14-0.

After the kickoff, Danville started from their own 26-yard line. After picking up two yards and losing five-yards on a delay of game, the Admirals punted from their own 23-yard line. Lincoln started from their own 45-yard line after the short punt.

Spurred on by a 27-yard run by Damon Spigle, Lincoln County quickly moved into scoring position, and finished it with a 2-yard run by Tucker Foster. Townes was again true on the PAT kick and Lincoln County led 21-0.

Danville had a three-and-out possession after Lincoln’s score and punted to the Patriots. Lincoln County took over at the Danville 46-yard line. Facing a fourth down and four yards to go at the Danville 40-ard line, the Patriots rolled out to pass and Foster had to throw it away under heavy duress.

Giving it up on downs, Danville took over at their own 40 yard-line. The Admirals got no yardage on their possession and punted with just over a minute to play in the half, giving Lincoln County the ball back at the Lincoln County 48-yard line.

The Patriots could not move the ball and punted again, giving Danville the ball at their own 17-yard line with ten seconds left in the half. Danville ran the ball one time and the half ended with Lincoln County leading 21-0

A light rain started in the first quarter but intensified into a mini monsoon by the second quarter. Most of the first half was played in a steady falling rain.

On the first possession of the second half, Kash Smith raced 63-yards for a touchdown, Colby Townes made his fourth PAT kick and Lincoln led 28-0. Danville gave it up on downs on their possession, after the punter scrambled after a low snap in punt formation.

Lincoln took over at the Danville 41-yard line. Big gains by Damon Spigle and Reed Curlis got Lincoln down to the 1-yard line where Curlis took it in for the score. Townes made the kick and Lincoln County led 35-0, initiating the running clock mercy rule.

Danville moved the ball a little and then gave it up on downs to Lincoln County at the Lincoln County 39-yard line. Behind the running of Brycen Mullins and Damon Spigle, the Patriots got to the Danville 6-yard line where Spigle punched it in. Townes remained perfect on the night and split the uprights on the PAT giving Lincoln a 42-0 lead.

Danville got the ball back with 5:33 left in the game and managed to pick up a first down. Time expired quickly with the running clock and the game ended with Danville in Lincoln County territory but not threatening.

The Patriots are now 3-0 on the season and host Bourbon County next week.

Scoring:

LC 1Q 7:38 Bob Floyd 9-yard run, Colby Townes kick (LC 7-0)

LC 1Q 1:18 Bradley Cole 18-yard pass from Tucker Foster, Townes kick (LC 14-0)

LC 2Q 7:10 Tucker Foster 2-yard run, Townes kick (LC 21-0)

“Another Fun Fact”

By Jonathan L. Smith

Tonight, WPBK-FM will provide live coverage of Lincoln County vs Danville at Centre College.

The last time we covered a game at Centre College, it was 1996 for the 75th anniversary celebration of Centre’s shocking defeat of Harvard in 1921.

Centre hosted Trinity University from San Antonio, Texas for that 75th Anniversary game.

With no other station covering the game, Norb King, our manager at the time, worked out the details with Centre College for WRSL-FM to provide the play-by-play.

Larry Nunemaker, Phil Pendleton, and I covered the game in much the same way we covered Lincoln County games back then, with me as the PBP announcer, Nunemaker with his witty color commentary, and Phil with his solid sideline reporting.

The night before, we had covered Lincoln’s loss to Montgomery County. That Saturday morning, some of our disc jockeys and sales teams had a live broadcast at Bob Allen’s dealership on Maple Avenue, right up to our live coverage.

It really was the halcyon days of local radio for us. WRSL-FM is now a K-Love affiliate with the WXKY call sign.

WPBK-FM is continuing our long tradition of covering local sports, and our presenting sponsor is a familiar name, Bob Allen Motor Mall. Our coverage will begin at 6:45 tonight.

“Under the Lights”

By Jonathan L. Smith

Lincoln County takes their 2-0 record on the road tonight to play the Danville Admirals.

Tonight’s game will not be at Admiral Stadium on Stanford Road, due to some maintenance issue at the stadium. Instead, the Patriots will play their first ever game at Centre College.

This has been the most lopsided series for the Patriots in school history, winning only 2 of the 26 games played, and one of the wins, in 2004, was an after-the-fact forfeit because Danville unknowingly played an ineligible player who had no bearing on the game.

The only Lincoln series win on the field against Danville was in 1988 (20-0).

The Admirals are 0-2 this season, with losses to East Jessamine (34-7) and Pulaski County (56-6). In fact, they are currently on a 14 game losing streak, dating back to November 2022.

The Patriots’ wins have been two close victories, beating Garrard County 27-20 and Bullitt Central 17-14. In both those games, the winning scores came in the final minute of play in tied games.

The young Patriots have been baptized by fire in close, early season games. It will be interesting to see how tonight’s game plays out.

Historical note: The first high school football night game under the lights in Central Kentucky took place 90 years ago, on September 21, 1934, when Danville opened the season under their new incandescent lights—against the Stanford High team. Before that, teams played in the afternoon to much smaller crowds.

“Close to a Walk-Off”

By Jonathan L. Smith

Senior placekicker Colby Townes kicked his first career field goal Friday night and it was a big one. It broke a 14-14 tie with only 27 seconds left in the game.

A walk-off score is one that happens with no time left to give a team a win (or in baseball, no at-bats left for the opponent).

There has never been a walk-off field goal in LCHS history, but there have been field goals that helped account for the point total that gave the Patriots a win of less than three points.

What Colby did is unique in school history. He kicked a late field goal to break a deadlock which accounted for an exact 3-point win. Thanks to the defense’s last stand, it had the effect of a walk-off field goal.

While he has kicked 71 PAT’s prior to this season, this was his first field goal. It was also the team’s first field goal since 2019 when Loren Melton kicked a 38-yarder against North Laurel.

It’s really nice to see a well-rounded team that is able to score points with the kicking team when needed.

Kudos to kicker Colby Townes, holder Brennin Hazlett, and long-snapper Johnny Adkins—and Coach Levi Rogers—for being ready and able to take advantage of the situation to win the game.

Game Report

Lincoln County 17
Bullitt Central 14

Our InterCounty Energy Lineman of the Game was Justin Mounce.

The Guardian Exterminating and B-Green Lawn Care Player of the game was Colby Townes for his game-winning field goal.

The game was delayed 30 minutes until 8:00 PM because of lightning during the pregame warmup period.

Bullitt Central won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Patriots received the kickoff and put together a 10-play, 64-yard scoring drive that culminated with a Kash Smith 10 yard run. Colby Townes added the PAT and with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter, Lincoln led 7-0.

On Bullitt Central’s ensuing possession, Lincoln County blocked a 4th down punt, setting themselves up in great field possession at the Central 10 yard line. After a false start, the Patriots lined up on the 15 yard line, and on the first play of the drive, Kash Smith powered his way into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night. Townes again added the PAT and Lincoln led 14-0 with 4:38 to play in the first quarter.

The two teams traded punts after that, before Bullitt Central turned it over on downs at the Lincoln 24-yard line.

The Patriots went to work with 6:15 to play in the half. Long runs by quarterback Tucker Foster and a pass to Johnny Adkins, moved Lincoln down to the one-yard line. On first down and goal from there, Lincoln had a miscue in the backfield, causing a fumble which Bullitt Central recovered at the 4 yard line wish 36 seconds left in the half. The half ended with Lincoln County leading 14-0.

Bullitt Central scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to tie the game with 1:04 left in the third quarter.

The teams traded punts again, before Lincoln County got the ball back at their own 19 yard line with 8:11 to play.

The Patriots methodically moved the ball down the field, behind the running of Kash Smith, Reed Curlis, and Tucker Foster, including a 17-yard run by Foster on a critical 4th-and-15 situation.

Lincoln got as deep as the three-yard line before a holding penalty pushed them back to the 13. They stalled out at the four yard line and lined up for a 4th down field goal. There was a penalty on Central that moved the ball to the two yard line. From there, Colby Townes booted a 19-yard field goal with 27.7 seconds left in the game to give Lincoln their only points of the second half, which ended up being the winning margin.

Lincoln’s defense held strong against the final Central onslaught to seal the victory.

Scoring:

LC 1Q 7:10 Kash Smith 10-yard run, Colby Townes kick (Lincoln leads 7-0)

LC 1Q 4:38 Kash Smith 15-yard run, Colby Townes kick (Lincoln leads 14-0)

BC 3Q 7:01 Michael Anderson 1-yard run, Tripp O’Brien kick (Lincoln leads 14-7)

BC 3Q 1:04 Michael Anderson 35-yard run, Tripp O’Brien kick (tied 14-14)

LC 4Q 0:27.7 Colby Townes 19-yard field goal (Lincoln leads 17-14)

The Lincoln record is now two wins with no losses.
