It began in California prisons in the 1970s and is a time to:
• Recognize the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners killed by the state
• Raise awareness of prison conditions
• Celebrate the Black tradition of resistance against anti-Black state violence and systemic oppression
• Demand the release of prisoners
