FIVE task box ideas to get you through winter ❄️

❄️Buckle the penguin-great work practicing buckles/casters using both hands
❄️Put together narwhals-another bilateral task 👏🏼, matching colors, problem solving (fitting the shape inside can be a bit tricky)
❄️assemble the coffee/hot cocoa cups-a seasonal multi-step sequence that requires using both hands and lining the pieces up just right
❄️ match the gloves-matching by color and great folding practice
❄️ build the winter snow globe-following directions, following a visual, sequencing, organization, and fine motor (baggies)

Winter break part ✌🏼was full of new experiences with G, self-care outings for mom, prepping for the return to school, and checking off those doctor’s appointments I procrastinate during the school year.

Merry Christmas from our family to all who celebrate 🎄✨

After six Christmases wishing for a baby, we finally get to spend today as a family of 3 and it’s the best gift I could have ever asked for.

Whether you’re surrounded by loved ones or spending a quiet day at home, I hope you are able to do something that brings you some joy today 🫶🏼

Always, always, always sending love and hope to those experiencing loss, grief, or otherwise struggling this holiday season.

I LOVE the fun activities the holidays can bring, but the spirit days, party days, assemblies, and schedule changes can start to feel overwhelming…for kids AND adults.

I don’t know about you, but we tend to love a good routine over here.

Here are some things we try to do to help our kids (and staff) adjust to the changes and enjoy the fun this time of year:
🎁 visuals-make icons to represent any new activities and have a general “special activity” ready to go for the inevitable last minute things
🎁 regulation tools- make sure your kids have access to sensory supports, break spots, fidgets…and remind them they are available! We might think “they know”, but a reminder can’t hurt when a routine is off. Unfamiliar visitors, large groups, change in locations can have big impacts!
🎁 talk about it!-make a social story or talk through the changes at morning meeting
🎁 listen to your students-if they are telling you or showing you a schedule change and/or special event is too much, listen and accommodate to the best of your ability. Schedule changes are an important part of life, but when there are multiple changes in a matter of days, it’s ok to sit one (or two!) out ✌🏼
🎁 think INCLUSIVE-what will make this more fun for EVERYONE?!
🎁 keep the rest the same-you may be skipping centers for a special assembly and it can be easily to get lost in the anticipation. Do your best to keep the rest of the day as routine as possible.

These lightbulbs from are a fun way to model and use our core word “open” leading into the holidays.

I fill them with a mixture of mini objects they may see in everyday life, seasonal vocab objects, and preferred items to make opening them a little more fun!
