At 50, I lost everything. Up until then, I was nothing but a workaholic. My business was my whole life, but now... now it was nothing. After my recent divorce, I found myself completely alone.

Day by day, I felt myself losing my humanity. I became bitter, cold, and unrecognizable. My heart hardened, and I thought this was rock bottom. I truly believed it couldn't get any worse — until my phone rang.

It was the hospital. The voice on the other end said, "You need to come to the hospital immediately!"

My hands shook as I hung up. I threw on my coat and rushed out the door, barely remembering to grab my keys. The drive felt like it took forever. I walked into the doctor's office and waited.

When the door opened, the doctor stepped in, his face serious.

I'm 34, and my parents wouldn't stop nagging me about being a spinster and never getting married. They tried setting me up with everyone, desperate for grandchildren. So when he offered my 12-year-old son, Ben, $10 to clear his driveway each time it snowed, Ben was over the moon. He talked endlessly about the gifts he’d buy for the family with his earnings, his little face lit up with excitement.

Ben worked hard through the first few snowfalls, waking early to shovel before school, cheeks flushed from the cold. Each evening, he’d proudly tally his earnings, his eyes shining with joy.

But two days before Christmas, Ben came home in tears. He wouldn’t talk at first, but after some coaxing, the story spilled out.

After leaving their home, he enrolled in university. Thanks to his diligence and efforts, he quickly became a successful lawyer. However, he was so caught up in his work that he never built a family of his own and lost touch with his foster family. Ten years later, he remembered his promise to return and decided to take one day off to visit his childhood home.
What he found shocked him.
The lawn was overgrown, and the white paint on the walls was almost entirely obscured by vines. As he walked toward the front door, he wondered if anyone still lived there.

I raised my daughter, Anna, alone. Every sacrifice I made—skipping meals, working double shifts—was for her. When she married Jason and moved to the city, we talked every day, sharing laughs and recipes. But lately, something felt… off. Our calls became rare, short, and she sounded disturbed.

Her health deteriorated, and by the time I was 12, she passed away. Before she died, she tried to call him, hoping he would take me in — but he didn't even answer.
