In the summer of 2018 my parents were traveling out of state when the largest forest fire in the nation, at the time, began raging right behind their home in Elk Ridge, Utah. Their entire city was put on mandatory evacuation. I quickly learned what items were priceless to my mother and father. Since I live in a nearby city, they asked me to remove certain items from their home to keep them safe. They did not ask me to grab their flat screen TV or other expensive items, but instead I was pulling photo frames from the walls and packing boxes of pictures, and files from filing cabinets out to my vehicle. They knew that most of the items in their house could be replaced, but not the photos and documents they had been saving their entire life. This is where MY STORY BEGINS. I began researching methods to preserve these priceless memories for my family, and a desire to help other people preserve their memories grew too. And thus began the creation of Digital Photo Legacy. While I was preserving my own family legacy, something AMAZING happened. I began to scan my parents 35mm slides and I was seeing things I had never seen before. You see the picture at the top of this post? The one of the elderly couple behind the pink flowers? This is my grandparents who have since passed away. I had never seen this great photo of them before. Why? Because it was hidden away, on a slide, somewhere in a box in my parents garage. From digitizing my parents slides, I got to see photos of an uncle who had passed away young, the funeral of my brother who died shortly after birth, pictures of my parents when they were just married, pictures of their honeymoon, their first home, and so much more. Each day I was scanning I couldn’t wait to see what I would find next. I was completely filled with joy! This joy just continued as I took our families VHS tapes and transferred them to DVDs. I was not worried about which sibling would inherit the family photos because they were now available to us all, our children, and generations to come! Scanning and transferring our customers photos obviously does not give us quite the same feeling as scanning our own families, but we know we are giving this gift and feeling to them and that is a great feeling in and of itself! What a great work this is!
