The Springfield Thunderbirds (St Louis Blues) 2023-24 season come to an end last Saturday when they fell @ home to the Hartford Wolf Pack (NY Rangers) 6-4. While the TBirds didn't get the results on the ice their fans had hoped for they supported the team in record numbers. The season finale was the 14th consecutive home sellout and the 20th full house of the season, both franchise records. F/C Adam Gaudette scored 44 season goals winning the Willie Marshall Award for the AHL's top goal scorer and was named to the AHL First All Star Team. AIC Men's Hockey will faceoff against RIT Saturday @ 7:05 in Rochester for the Atlantic Hockey Association Championship. 5th seed AIC defeated both Air Force and Holy Cross 2 games to 1 to advance. 1st seed RIT swept both Robert Morris and Niagara 2 games to none.

The winner of the one game AHA Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 1 Men's Hockey Championship Tournament.

Earlier in the week RIT's Tommy Scafone was named the AHA's Goaltender of the Year and AIC's Brian Kramer was selected as the AHA's Best Defenseman. RIT's Wayne Wilson won AHA Coach of the Year honors.

The teams met twice during the regular season with AIC winning the the first game 3-2 in OT and RIT taking the second 5-2.

Will it become a statement game?

Wearing themed uniforms on Ice-O-Topes Night the Springfield Thunderbirds, AHL affiliate of the St Lous Blues, defeated the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals) 6-3 @ a sold out MassMutual Center last Saturday night. The Bears are the defending AHL Calder Cup Champions and have by far the best record in the AHL this season.

Hershey scored first before Springfield responded with 4 unanswered goals. A Hershey short handed goal late in the 2nd sent the game into the 3rd period with Springfield leading 4-2. Will Bitten's breakaway goal about 1/2 way thru the 3rd gave the TBirds what seem an insurmountable 5-2 lead but the Bears answered quickly 2 minutes later making it 5-3. The strong Bears offense kept the pressure on outshooting Springfield 18-5 in the 3rd but Malcolm Subban made numerous fine saves to hold them at bay and Dylan Coghlans's laser from deep in Springfield's zone split Hershey's empty net with 49 seconds left to seal the victory.

It was also a big day for Springfield alumni in the NHL. On nationally televised games Joel Hofer made 33 saves and Jake Neighbors had 2 goals as the St. Louis Blues beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. In Boston, Charlie Lindgren earned the shutout as the Washington Capitals blanked the Bruins 3-0. The Lindgren/Hofer goalie tandem helped lead Springfield to the Calder Cup Championship Finals two seasons ago.

Springfield is on the road facing the Charlotte Checkers (Florida Panthers) this Saturday and Sunday. They return home Fri Feb 23 hosting the Hartford Wolf Pack (New York Rangers) and Saturday the 24th hosting the Providence Bruins (Boston). They are back on the road Sunday the 25th vs the Bridgeport Islanders (New York). All 5 games are AHL Atlantic Division contests and will have a big impact on the tight Division standings.

Mykonos Restaurant held it's Grand Re-Opening ceremony Thursday January 5.

Now located on the 1st floor of the TD Bank Building in downtown Springfield, 1441 Main St, Mykonos first opened @ the Springfield Plaza over 40 years ago and was recently a fixture @ the Food Court in the Eastfield Mall.

Ryan Suzuki went upper shelve to score in the 1st round of a shootout and Malcolm Subban made saves in all 3 rounds as the Springfield Thunderbirds (St. Louis Blues) defeated the Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sabres) 4-3 Wednesday night @ the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA.

Springfield got goals in regulation from Adam Gaudette, Dylan Coghlan and Will Bitten. Americans goalie Devin Cooley made 38 saves on 41 shots including a stellar glove stop on a Bitten breakaway in the 1st period. Rochester managed only 20 shots but were turned away on numerous good scoring opportunities by Subban.

The game marked the debut of Daniel Tkaczuk as Springfield interim head coach taking over for Drew Barrister who was named interim head coach of the NHL Blues replacing Craig Berube.

Next up for the TBirds are road games this Saturday vs the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers) and Sunday vs the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals). Springfield returns home Friday December 22 hosting the Bears. Hershey is the defending AHL Calder Cup Champions and have the best record in the AHL this season.

Springfield Thunderbirds (St Louis Blues) Win 3 In A Row

The TBirds beat the Harford Wolf Pack (New York Rangers) Friday night on the road 5-2.
Saturday night @ home they defeated the Providence Bruins (Boston) 5-2.
Sunday afternoon Springfield completed the trifecta @ Providence beating the Bruins 3-2 in OT.

After dropping 4 of their first 5 games Springfield evened their season record @ 4-4 and jumped right into the mix of the AHL Atlantic Division standings.

Offensively Springfield has been led by AHL goal scoring leader forward Adam Gaudette who netted 9 goals in the team's first 7 games. Gaudette added an assist Sunday to extend his scoring streak to 8 games.

The Thunderbirds look to jump above the .500 mark for the first time this season when they host the Belleville Senators (Ottawa) Friday November 3 @ the MassMutual Center. The first puck drops @ 7:05PM.

Five candidates compete today, Tuesday September 12, in the primary for Mayor of Springfield, MA.

Incumbent Domenic Sarno faces challenges from Springfield City Council President Jesse Lederman, Springfield City Councilor Justin Hurst, MA State Representative Orlando Ramos and political newcomer psychotherapist Dr. David Ciampi.

The two top vote getters will advance to the general election that takes place November 7.

Candidates for Springfield City Council At Large are also on the ballot with the top 10 vote getters advancing.

The Springfield Thunderbirds Community Caravan sponsored by Dunkin makes it's 3rd and final summer stop at the Cyr Arena grounds in Forest Park, Springfield Saturday September 9 from 1PM - 3PM.

Boomer will be on hand to host activities that will include street hockey competition, live music, food trucks, souvenir raffles and appearances by Thunderbirds team staff. The event is open to all ages and free to attend. Over the summer the Caravan made 2 pervious stops @ Szot Park in Chicopee and Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.

In an effort to increase last year's record 15 MassMutual Center sellouts the Thunderbirds will hold over 30 game day promotions during the upcoming 2023-24 season including Opening Night Saturday October 14 vs the Hartford Wolf Pack (NY Rangers), Deuces Wild Fridays, Winning Wednesdays, Tommy Cross Night, Pink In the Rink, and Teddy Bear Pools Night. All guests who visit The Forest Park Zoo today, Monday Aug. 28, will receive free admission courtesy of Highland Street Foundation's August Adventures program. No registration is required to attend. The Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission ends at 3:30.

There is a $3 charge for cars entering the park with Massachusetts plates and $5 for out of state plates. Admission on foot and bicycle is free.

The Springfield Mayor's Office and Parks Department announced the Forest Park Pool will remain open an extra week until August 20. Pool hours are 11AM- 6PM 7 days a week.

Admission is free with registration. Registration can be made onlne @ https://www.springfield-ma.gov/secure/pools-reg.0.html until August 20th or in person at Cyr Arena, next door to Forest Park Pool, from 10:00am – 6:00pm.

The adjacent splash pad is open to all and does not require registration.

Hockeyday 2023 presented by the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society takes place Saturday August 5 @ The Young Building of the Eastern States Exposition 1305 Memorial Ave West Springfield, MA 01089

Players and front office personnel from the Indians, Kings, Falcons and Thunderbirds will be on hand celebrating Springfield's long and rich hockey history. There will be interactive hockey activities .with new and special merchandise available including jerseys, t-shirts, hats and lots more. A Hockeyday auction will take place, with one of a kind prizes.
With the abundance of guest speakers this year the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society anticipates this will be the biggest and best Hockeyday ever.

Professional hockey began in Springfield in 1926 when the Springfield Indians became a charter member of the Canadian-American League led by Lester Patrick of the NHL's New York Rangers. The team was named after the Indian Motorcycle company. They became part of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 1936.
