BAXIES ESSENTIAL EPISODES: On February 27th, 2023 I posted an interview with drummer Gina Schock of The Go Go’s. I love this interview for a lot of reasons. Not just because the Go Go’s were the first (and only) all-female Rock band to release a #1 record. Not just because the Go Go’s story is so amazing (because it is). But because Gina is a great sport! During this interview Gina’s house in San Francisco was in the middle of brutal wind storm. The storm interrupted our Zoom connection, blew down a fence, AND blew a refrigerator out of her garage! Which I believe is a first in podcast history! And yet, in spite of all of that she refused to end the interview early! Gina is a total pro! One of my most memorable episodes ever! This was incredibly influential band whose 1981 single “I’d Like to Shoot You Down” became a surprise hit through the NYC club scene—unbeknownst to the band! A new collection of Radio 1 session on the BBC has just been released by Liberation Hall Records. It also included several sessions with the late John Peel. However, his new band, KANAK, is about to release their second EP this year. The first, which came out several months ago ago (“On the Outside”) includes Peter Wood from Dramarama and Johnny Rao who had played with David Johansen and Syl Sylvain from the New York Dolls. Both EP’s were produced by the legendary Ed Stasium (go ahead…look him up)! Miles is not only the older brother of Stewart Copeland of The Police, he was also the owner and founder of IRS Records. This was an independent record label that boasted a roster that not only included The Police but also some of most important bands of its time. This included REM, The GoGo’s, English Beat, Fine Young Cannibals, Buzzcocks, Skafish, The Damned, The Alarm, Wall of Voodoo, Magazine, The Fall, Dead Kennedys, The Stranglers, Oingo Boingo, and many others. In this interview Miles not only talks about the fascinating history of IRS Records, he also talks about his unbelievable childhood where he and his brothers were raised abroad by one of the co-founders of the CIA! The Toad the Wet Sprocket occupies rarified space in that they were a group of teenagers who balanced exceptional business sense with their notorious DIY work ethic. It’s a pretty amazing story.
