AfAm Point of View

AfAm Point of View Point of View is a monthly news magazine that started in 2003 by its owners, publisher Frederick A. Hurst and editor Marjorie J. Hurst
(21)

Specialties

As originally conceived, Point of View was an African American newspaper. It is now shared by a much broader community. Writers come from many different ethnic groups as do its readers. The transition of Point of View to a more general newspaper came about naturally over time as it became clear that other ethnic groups shared the same hunger for a different point of view. Our distribu

tion will soon reach 30,000. Additionally, with the development of our new website, we are now an on-line newspaper. Those who prefer to read Point of View electronically need only visit our website and with one click begin reading an exact electronic replica. And, of course our website adds another level of exposure for our advertisers, whose ads in our newspaper will also be in our web paper. Advertisers may also pay an additional fee to advertise on available space on most pages of our website, which we are continuing to upgrade. History

Established in 2003. Point of View is a bi-monthly news magazine started in 2003 by its owners, publisher Frederick A. Hurst, both of whom are attorneys. Point of View is distributed free to select locations in Western Massachusetts and throughout Connecticut. We charge a $30.00 annual subscription fee for those who prefer to have it delivered by mail. The motivation to start Point of View came from the desire of its founders to open up the world of journalism to include the viewpoints of a wider variety of people and to provide readers with information different in format and content from that which is typically provided by the mainstream media. Our articles are written by educators, lawyers and financial planners, doctors and other health personnel, traditional journalists, poets and musicians, business people and more. They are people who have something to say that other people want to read.

LIZ CHENEY ON TRUMPI could never vote for Liz Cheney but I would certainly embrace her and welcome her into the human race. Her selfless service on the January 6 Congressional Committee is alone impressive as has been her condemnation of those involved in planning the insurrection, including the Republican former president who she has sworn to do everything in her power to keep out of future office....

By Frederick A. Hurst “POWER” AND THE SPRINGFIELD POLICE COMMISSIONSome people quiver when they hear the word “power” used in a political context, especially when it is used by a Black person. And it’s especially been that way since the sixties when the political meaning of the term was reinvented by organizations like the Black Panthers and individuals like the late Stokely Carmichael who wrote a defining book on the term “Black Power.” Stokely and those like him scared the hell out of White people and caused many reputable and lesser-reputable Black folks alike to cringe....

By Frederick A. Hurst Springfield’s recent Ward 5 special election to find a replacement for Marcus Williams, who unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from Springfield’s city council, revealed some unpleasant things about Black politics in Springfield. As with so many others I’m sure, the first thing that came to my mind when Williams made his surprise announcement was “Who might be the best person to replace him?” I must admit that my idea of “best person” will not be shared by everyone, certainly not by the cadre of Black opportunists and politicians who “suck up” to White politicians for a pittance while so many of the needs of the Black community remain unmet, as is the case with several of our existing elected officials....

$500 THOUSAND TO STONE SOUL!? I have nothing against the Stone Soul Festival or the people who organize and run it. But when Mayor Sarno announced he was giving the organization $500,000 of federal government money to run what, for the most part, is a community festival (and a good and fun one at that), the first thing that came to my mind was that the money could be better spent spread among Springfield’s struggling Black businesses who, by their owners’ accounts, have instead received even less than the even much smaller amounts they expected....
