There was no algorithm deciding what you heard next.

No playlist built just for you.

No skipping until it “felt right.”

If music was on, it was on for everyone.

You sat there and listened.

Sometimes you loved it.

Sometimes you didn’t.

And you didn’t get a vote.

Someone else owned the stereo.

Someone else chose the station.

Someone else decided when it changed.

Funny thing is… that lack of control shaped taste.

You learned patience.

You learned context.

You learned songs you never would’ve chosen—but remembered forever.

Some of your favorites didn’t arrive wrapped in excitement.

They grew on you because they were unavoidable.

Today, music bends around personal preference.

Back then, you bent around the music.

Some people will say that was limiting.

Others will say it made discovery real.

Either way, an entire generation was shaped by what happened to be playing.

Even when we didn’t like it.
