Titled Drive-Away D***s onscreen, Drive-Away Dolls is new crime-comedy film directed by Coen Brother, Ethan Coen. The movie follows Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan, Miracle Workers) and Jamie, a couple of le***an friends on a roadtrip to visit Marian's aunt. They discover a suitcase in the trunk of their rental car, which it turns out some very dangerous men are after. They also discover a head in a hatbox.
The movie opens to Pedro Pescal being beheaded for the contents of the suitcase. This actually made me want to stop watching since that's generally too gorey for me. But I decided to give it a chance. Luckily, Drive Away Dolls, it did not continue on that gorey of a route. Still it came across as an imitation of Pulp Fiction. I agreed with my mother's assessment, which is that it seemed that it was trying really hard to be clever, funny, and artistic, and yet somehow fell short. Once again, I bore witness to a poor Texan accent in a movie. Are Texan accents really that difficult that trained actors cannot do it? Mother who frequently visited the state because my grandmother was from Texas, has vouched that Jamie's accent was a poor excuse for a Texan accent.
Oddly enough, Jamie did look a lot like my friends ex, so they did nail a certain q***r look. I didn't really like either protagonists all that much. Jamie is a serial cheater, with angry ex-girlfriend, Sukie, (Beanie Feldstein, Booksmart) who is a cop. Marian corrects the way that her co-worker speaks, and then tells her co-worker not to correct they way that she speaks. This was clearly meant to be funny, but it just makes her come across as rude and hypocritical. Still, as Marian and Jamie begin to fall in love, I did find myself rooting for their love story. They definitely fit into the "opposites attract" trope. As mentioned, Jamie is a serial cheater, whereas, Marian hasn't had s*x in years. Jamie is futch (femme-butch), but Marian is just femme. Jamie is crass and confident; Marian is reserved and buttoned-up. I liked the scene in which they danced with each other. I'm sucker for people slowly realizing that they're falling in love with someone while they're dancing with each other.
All in all, I felt like the Drive-Away Dolls/D***s was okay. I wouldn't strongly recommend it, but people who enjoy that the specific crime-comedy genre, Pulp Fiction, sapphic representation, and a star-studded cast would probably like it. There was a fun twist at the end, although I won't spoil it. I give it 3 out of 5 rainbows.
