Every now and again an adventurous (and lucky) voyager happen to find their way to the Marshall Islands! José Salvador Alvarenga, age 37, adrift in a fishing boat for 14 months, was found January 30, 2014 when spotted land and swam to shore reaching Tile, Ebon. He survived mainly on a diet of raw fish, turtles, small birds, sharks and rainwater. Emi Libokmeto and Russel Laikidrik found him naked, clutching a knife and shouting in Spanish. His first drink after 14 months at sea: Coke. After treatment in Majuro, he was reunited with his family in El Salvador on February 10, 3014. Check back to see the most recent person to make an unexpected visit to Aelōñ Kein Ad.

🚨 Marshall Islands National Police Department implicated in drug bust, Hilary Hosia reports. Local Majuro police uncovered a major drug trafficking operation run from inside the capital's jail, involving both inmates and officers. The bust revealed a prison “community” trading tattoos, haircuts, karaoke, alcohol and other drugs, all under the national police's watch. Tommy Delcaro, who was deported from the US and was later imprisoned for murder in Majuro, was identified as the main drug runner in the jail. President Hilda Heine and officials are now demanding answers and seeking US assistance to tackle the growing drug problem. CID Head Detective Tarjohn Motellang said the bust was just the tip of the iceberg and that his team is determined to unravel the drug network that has been plaguing the capital city for years.

The first couple of days of Parliament has created a firestorm within the Marshall Islands this week following the revelation of a major drug bust that took place at the Marshall Islands National Police Department....

In case you missed the news, at the BLS Hawaiian Paradise Luau on July 12, Arlynda Jonas will be joining us for a special hula performance. Her bio is below. We hope you'll join us for the special event!

Hi, my name is Arlynda Jonas, I am a practitioner of various Pacific Island dances. I was born in the Marshall Islands. I’m half Marshallese and Kosraen. I began dancing at the age of 8 years old, and in 2011 I attended an arts school in Kansas City where I learned Pacific Island Dances.

I have lived in Northwest Arkansas since 2014, and after moving to NWA I soon began leading a hula ministry at a local church and offering private lessons to students. After connecting with local pacific island organizations, I was able to expand my teaching practice to include more students and offer more performance opportunities.

I currently lead a group called “Ocean Wave” in Springdale, Arkansas at the Jones Center, and the group has performed in various events across NWA. Ocean Wave is a dance initiative that focuses on exploration and education of various Pacific Island dances. Our mission is to educate participants and audiences on Pacific Island cultural traditions, and to empower youth to build confidence through this arts specific approach.
