If this system maintains its current size and path (yes I'm hedging uncertainty here) , it will mostly miss us and hit the Plateau. We can maybe expect some flurries or maybe a dusting.

Junk science alert..

Some experts argue that we need a Category 6 classification for hurricanes with wind speeds exceeding 192 mph.

Meteorologists can never get a forecast right, but now they can create and steer hurricanes???

Precipitation Discussion

SUMMARY...Scattered thunderstorm clusters ahead of cold front may bring 1.5-2.5" resulting in isolated flash flooding into this evening.

DISCUSSION...Regional NEXRAD and GOES-E IR imagery shows a few thunderstorm clusters have developed over middle TN and central KY which is ahead of a cold front. Recent rainfall estimates of 1.5"/hr are seen south of Cincinnati and north of Nashville. Sufficient moisture of 1.6 to 1.7" PW and instability with MLCAPE 1500-2000 J/kg are allowing this heavy development. SWly low level flow, which is parallel to the advancing cold front, is 25-30kt which will keep a repeating thunderstorm threat into the evening and slow eastward progression despite relatively quick storm motions in 45kt mean layer steering flow.

There are more flash-flood susceptible areas in the outlook including south central KY where 2-3" fell overnight, urban areas such as the ones mentioned above, and over northern KY where 3hr FFG is around 1". This scattered activity will continue to produce 1-2" in a couple hours with localized amounts of 3" possible into the evening. Should these higher totals fall on the more susceptible areas, flash flooding is possible. Overall the flash flooding is more of an isolated threat.

Francine has strengthened into a tropical storm. The forecast has it becoming a category 1 hurricane, making landfall in Louisiana, then moving over Tennessee.

I’ll be breaking down the impacts this afternoon on News 2!

Also, here’s a reminder that you can track tropical systems on the News 2 Weather Authority App!

Radar in northeast Mississippi is already showing these storms rotating and NWS Memphis is rightly throwing tornado warnings on these storms.

Please remain weather aware as these storms enter southwest (the highlighted area)

Tornadoes are not the only serious threat tonight. Make sure your weather radio is set for a severe thunderstorm warning to wake you up as well. We are in the "hatched" area of the bullseye for wind, which means a straight-line wind from a microburst could be as high as 80mph, which is Cat1 hurricane force and will do significant damage, even with no tornado warning.

The main squall line of this system looks to be affecting us at around 2-3am. HAVE A WAY to be woken up! DO NOT rely on weather sirens to awaken you. Know ahead of time what to do if/when the alarm sounds. You might not be able to think clearly enough while half-asleep to figure it out in real time. Make sure you have helmets, mattresses, whatever you can use to make your safe place safer. And have shoes with you! If something bad happens, you will need them.

OK heads-up y'all, serious business here. This severe weather threat is so far, looking quite similar to our previous tornado outbreak a couple weeks ago, with similar threats possible. In the graphics attached, a good part of the area is in the "hatched" (elevated impact possible) part of the alert. Here's what we are looking at for the hatched areas of the graphics. Within 25 miles of any given point:
- 45-60+% chance of damaging straight-line winds (could gust up to hurricane force)
- 30% chance of large hail (maybe 2"+)
- 10% chance of a tornado (maybe EF2+)

05/10/2024

Everyone please look closely at these images. This was an EF–3 tornado. This is why you are urged to be in an interior room on the lowest level of your house. Look at the only walls in this house that survived. This is why it is imperative to get to your safe space when a possible tornado approaches.
