Y’all remember listening to albums front to back? Like when your favorite artist released a new one, and you hit play at track 1, and didn’t stop till the whole cd was over?

I remember when “The Eminem Show” released, the whole album was composed to flow together from the 1st track into the second. And it’d be structured to really make you go through the emotions so you FELT every lyric as the album progressed. You would FEEL it; exactly what the artist was attempting to portray. Like, the songs described you to some extent. It felt like a story. You would get chills, feeling like someone finally understands you.

It was magic. With just a few lyrics you could be stronger or really truly feel the pain in a healthy “I’m not alone” sense, or bare your weaknesses and shortcomings, and even make you feel powerful. Then the cd would end, and you’d get that empty feeling like, “what do I do now?” Obviously, you’d start it over from track one, maybe repeating favorite tracks.

Albums were often life changing, because they could give you new perspectives and understandings, even about yourself. They could give you the strength to do the things you needed to do, or help you to live with the things you couldn’t change. In some deeper level that artist was right there with you, and you’d be okay.

Even though our parents and elders didn’t understand it, this music was our therapy. It saved some of us.

I really miss when music did that.

“I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life. I'm still working through it personally, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to me and says, 'Will you help me?' I will always say, 'Yes, I know how to do that. I will do that for you, even if I can't always do it for myself! So I do that, whenever I can. In groups, or one on one.
And I created the Perry House in Malibu, a sober-living facility for men. I also wrote my play The End of Longing, which is a personal message to the world, an exaggerated form of me as a drunk. I had something important to say to people like me, and to people who love people like me.
When I die, I know people will talk about Friends, Friends, Friends. And I'm glad of that, happy l've done some solid work as an actor, as well as given people multiple chances to make fun of my struggles on the world wide web...
but when I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people.
I know it won't happen, but it would be nice."
