Author and domestic culinary expert with over 80 years of experience, Eloise C. Halsey is a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother who lives in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Born in Mulberry Gap, Tennessee, and raised in nearby Rose Hill, Virginia, she met her husband Ron at Berea College and they raised their own family in Kingsport, Tennessee.

They lived in Kansas City and Greensboro, North Carolina, before retiring and moving to Ron’s boyhood home in Alleghany County, North Carolina.

Dr. Suzanne Mellow-Irwin will be at the Alleghany County Public Library tomorrow, Saturday, June 29, from 10am-2pm.

She will be signing copies of The Tale of Bella, the fourth (and final) story in the Stratford Oaks Tales. This book features Bella, a wild mustang from the rugged mountains of southeastern Nevada and her journey to a new home in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina.

The Tale of Bella features full-color images and a delightful narrative that describes the entire adoption process through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and B***o Program.

Emma Bell Miles (1879–1919) artist, author, and naturalist was born in Evansville, Indiana, and moved to Walden’s Ridge in Southeast Tennessee when she was 11. Her mother died just before her 22nd birthday and she eloped with Frank Miles two weeks later.
They had 5 children- one having died when he was only 3. Their marriage was not an easy one. Beset by poverty, through her art and writing, Emma eventually became the family breadwinner. While this added to their discord, she remained positive and creative.
Her strong convictions and tenacity and exceptional talent for not only recognizing the beauty of her natural environment, but in relating it, (through every creative medium available to her) were sadly, limited by the mores of an obsolete era and her untimely passing at the age of 39.
Had she different circumstances she might be as well known as an O. Henry or a James Whitcomb Riley.
