On Monday, Aug. 5, at 1:30 p.m. the Community Development and Environment Committee (CDEC) will hear and hold a public hearing on Proposal No. O2024-540, an ordinance adopting interim amendments to the Pierce County Code to fulfill an immediate need for emergency shelter for unsheltered residents of Pierce County and declaring an imminent threat to public health or safety exists. A similar proposal came before Council as Proposal O2024-538 on Tuesday, July 9, which was an emergency ordinance adopting similar amendments proposed in Proposal No. O2024-540. While the majority of the Council voted in favor of O2024-538, emergency ordinances require a two-thirds majority to pass.

If approved, Proposal No. O2024-540 would authorize religious, non-profit, and governmental organizations to provide temporary housing for up to 60 individuals experiencing homelessness. Any temporary housing community would have requirements to be professionally managed, with 24/7 staff and public health and safety standards maintained.

The CDEC meeting will be held in Council Chambers at 930 Tacoma Ave. South Rm 1046 in Tacoma. In-person attendance at Committee and Council meetings is always welcome. You can also attend remotely by calling (253) 215-8782 and using Webinar ID: 928-4334-3887 or visiting piercecountywa.gov/4414. You can also provide written comments on the proposal's webpage here.

(Taken from the Pierce County Code)The Community Development & Environment Committee shall consider and make recommendations on matters including, but not limited to: Building; Budget, Budget Goals and Proviso Compliance; Construction and Fire Codes; Capital Facilities; Current Use Assessment; Dev...

So you might want to show up with sleeves, gloves, and possibly eye protection if you want to deal with that part. There should be some people on hand who know how best to work around that toxic plant....

OPINION Potable water, drinking water to you and me, is critical to all life on earth. In Pierce County, that water comes from glacier melt or rain. It is taken from rivers, lakes, and aquifers underground. In Washington State there is currently not anyone desalinizing sea water for use, although Florida, Texas, and California do. In Pierce County the water in Tacoma comes from a few wells, but most comes from the Green River watershed....

Someone please explain.) So our sense of community took a big shift in the 1980's....
