Congratulations Authenticators – You're Our 10th Brkthru U Graduating Class!

14 recent additions to the Brkthru team just completed their week-long onboarding and training during Brkthru U, becoming our 10th class since launching the program in December 2022. They named themselves Authenticators, and their energy, enthusiasm and passion was on full display.

The August 2024 class brings the total number of Brkthru U graduates close to 200 – new hires and veteran employees – who have graduated from this hands-on, interactive training that covers our commitment to service, Core Values and brand pillars, how we work and processes, department overviews, our clients and key verticals, and The Brkthru Way.

This week, our Detroit Hub (one of 19 regional employee hubs across the country) hosted the Authenticators for a dinner of famous Detroit pizza.

Brkthru Mid-Summer Hub Hangouts!

Brkthru employees beat the summer heat by gathering recently in their respective cities for our Hub Hangouts.

The Charlotte hub had a great time enjoying St. Louis style pizza. It was this North Carolina hub’s biggest turn out yet.

For its July hangout, our Cincinnati hub enjoyed relaxing pedicures and conversation, and after headed out to indulge in Brkthru employees' favorite day of the month - Pizza Friday!

Our Tampa hub had a great time bowling, having appetizers and endless conversation that made for a fun few hours. This hub welcomed its newest hub member, and two hub members realized they graduated from the same high school (one year apart). Rumor has it, the conversation was so great the bowling alley told this hub they were bowling too slow.

Our Hub Hangouts are an opportunity for groups of Brkthru employees in 19 hubs across the country to get together once a month at a location of their choosing to socialize and spend quality time together.

How can you better reach the LGBTQ+ market during Pride and every month, and be even more genuine and authentic? Hear from two well-known and respected leaders in media and LGBTQ market:

The 48-member team of Brkthru media dynamos gathered at our Detroit Training Center this week for their summer department offsite. Theirs was the first department offsite at our recently opened 7,000-square foot facility in Southfield, MI.

“This week, the Brkthru Media team got together for our annual department offsite,” said Brkthru Vice President of Media Tom Leone. “It’s always wonderful to meet in person, and this time it was at our brand-new Detroit Training Center.”

During their meetings, the team emphasized the importance of thinking beyond the metrics by emphasizing tangible business results for our clients. By leveraging our platform agnostic approach, collaboration across Search, Social and Programmatic, they can make a positive impact to our client’s bottom line.

Many brands will show support of the LGBTQ+ community prominently during Pride month, yet many have a long way to go in representing diversity and inclusivity. True support must be more than rainbow-hued posts.

Consumers are giving a more watchful eye to how the brands they buy participate in Pride, and companies must go deeper than rainbow advertising, website headers, social media posts and packaging. Brands are watched for authenticity and are being called out for purporting to support the LGBTQ+ community even when some companies have a history of donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to support anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

It makes sense for companies to support the LGBTQ+ community, given estimates it’s now a $4.7 trillion worldwide market. Called “pink money,” it is no longer fringe. LGBTQ+ members are the fastest-growing minority segment in America in terms of spending power.

Financial services company Credit Suisse recently noted that their stock basket of LGBTQ-inclusive companies consistently outperformed the overall market. Publicly traded companies that choose to pursue pink money and overall solidarity with the q***r community deliver above-average financial performance. The LGBTQ+ community is a loyal and lucrative market when properly engaged; pink money is a powerful economic force, and pink money donations will increasingly influence issues and political campaigns in coming years.

How can your organization better reach the LGBTQ+ market and make your Pride month genuine? A few thoughts from Brkthru:
Normalize year-round awareness and support

​Embrace it within the business. It’s one thing to project an image of being a company that values equal rights for the LGBTQ community, but another to live by those standards.​ At Brkthru, we foster an environment where all employees can be their authentic selves every day.

Make it last. If you’re serious about LGBTQ rights, then show it all year round. Don’t just change your logo to a multi-colored background for a month as an easy marketing ploy.

Make a charitable donation. Give to a relevant organization or good cause that helps to provide resources, supports or helps to the gay or LGBTQ community.

​Avoid “rainbow washing.” If a brand opts to build a campaign around Pride but has taken actions in the past that fly in the face of the cause, it can be viewed as shallow and opportunistic.

70 Employees Provide 500 Service Hours During 14 Volunteer Events!

For the third year, Brkthru team members gave their time, energy and hearts performing community service for “31 Days of Service” during our anniversary month of May.

We sorted donated clothing, packed food at pantries and delivered meals to help fight hunger, bought and assembled gift bags for a shelter, cared for pets at a humane society, served drinks and food, tended to public greenspaces, made donations, and packed clothing and supplies children and families in need.

Recently …

· Our Tampa Hub volunteered again this year at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and this time donated their monthly hub hangout budget and then received a behind-the-scenes tour before their dog-walking shift started. HSTB currently has more than 800 animals in their care between in the shelter and in foster care.

· The Brkthru Philly Crew spent an afternoon at Cradles to Crayons for the second year, checking clothes for quality and sorting into outfits to package up for children.

· Our Cincinnati Hub enjoyed a tropical-themed happy hour while assembling care packages that contained basic necessities for women. These bags were delivered by hub members to Anna Louise Inn (Women’s Shelter) and will help women who are victims of domestic violence.

Through our 31 Days of Service program, our founders Jeff Hastedt and Andrew Sklerov support Brkthru employees with time off to conduct much-needed service in their local communities.

Two mighty Brkthru Hubs conducted their community service recently during our “31 Days of Service”:

• The Brkthru Charlotte, NC, team spent a day cleaning up a local greenway.

• Our Boston crew went to Cradles to Crayons for a day full of sorting and packing children’s clothing. Their group was able to put together 35 completed totes of clothing!

Ohio Hubs Represent for Brkthru “31 Days of Service.”

Members of three Brkthru Hubs in the Buckeye State performed their community service in Columbus, Cincinnati and Medina, OH, during our “31 Days of Service,” commemorating Brkthru’s anniversary month of May. Employees across the country demonstrated our Core Value of Contribution by performing acts of community service. From Ohio:

· Brkthru Columbus Hub members Colleen Buzza and Matt McCague assembled furniture at The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio, helping to provide furniture for families affected by homelessness, domestic violence and other crises.

· Graphic Design Jaime Grzybowski, a member of our Remote Hub, served adults and children in need at Cups Café, a restaurant-style free kitchen in Medina, OH.

· Regional Director of Client Success Debbie Perkins, her daughter and two friends, prepared healthy snacks at Cincinnati’s Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home for critically ill children and their families while they get the care at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital.

· Our NC Triangle Hub volunteered at the The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina that provides food for friends and neighbors facing hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina.

· The VA 757 Hub joined Scott Memorial United Methodist Church for their Fresh Food Wednesdays drive-thru for the second year in a row. This is the largest food pantry in the city of Virginia Beach!

Brkthru Dedicates 31 Days of Service in May!

“31 Days of Service” commemorates Brkthru’s anniversary month of May by supporting employees with the time off to give back to their communities.

We're sharing all this week how our team members across the country conducted their community service:

· 13 members of the Brkthru Detroit Hub performed their “31 Days of Service” at the Capuchin Services Center, which assists 228,000 Detroit neighbors annually with emergency food and clothing.

· The NY Hub volunteered at the Sharing Shelf, working through dozens of bags of donated clothes, inspecting them for quality - recycling clothes that were past their prime and sorting high-quality donations into appropriate gender and size bins. They donated gift cards to the Sharing Shelf so families in need can purchase new socks and underwear.

· Our Austin Hub did their part at the Mobile Food Pantry service, helping to provide Central Texans in need with food staples where local food assistance services are not available or cannot keep up with demand.

Brkthru U May ’24: Our 9th So Far!

18 recently hired employees at Brkthru completed the week-long onboarding and training during Brkthru U, becoming our ninth class since launching the program in December 2022.

To-date, 176 Brkthru employees – new hires and veteran employees – have graduated from the hands-on, interactive training that covers our commitment to service, Core Values and brand pillars, how we work and processes, department overviews, our clients and key verticals, and The Brkthru Way.

This is the second Brkthru U class held at our new Detroit Training Center in Southfield, MI. The 7,000 square-foot facility includes two training rooms, modular open space and offices, and state-of-the art audio-visual technology.

With a business model based on service, aligning all employees to the Ethos of Yes ensures Brkthru continues to receive a greater-than-90% overall satisfaction score from our clients.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? It’s key to have a dedicated workspace. I could work from the comforts of my couch, but rarely do because I miss my wide walnut desk and two monitors!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧? Excelling at Excel! If you’ve ever said, “There has got to be an easier way of doing this.” when working with data, I guarantee there’s a dozen ways to do it more efficiently in Excel!

𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐬? My house is a zoo! We have a Brittany spaniel mix (Nolie), basset/beagle (Béla), pug (Walter), four cats (Petunia, Azalea, Digitalis, and Garfunkel), and a flock of backyard chickens.

𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝? Reading is one of my hobbies; there are 300+ books scattered around the house! At my wedding, I carried a book bouquet down the aisle instead of flowers. I bundled my favorite book (Watership Down) along with my husband’s (The Silmarillion), tied together with lace and wildflowers.

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬? RadioLab, Freakonomics, This American Life, and Criminal.

𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞? I have a curious knack for writing ditties about advertising sung to the tune of popular songs (e.g. “How to Optimize Guide” parodying “American Pie” by Don McLean).

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞? To quickly learn to play the banjo. I love bluegrass music of all kinds – traditional, newgrass, slamgrass, and all other offshoots!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞? I secretly wish for a zombie apocalypse, so I could seek out a self-sufficient community and volunteer for tending the veggie garden. In the meantime, I’m happy watering our media campaigns with love and watching their performance grow!

The Brkthru Leadership Team gathered in Boston last week for its Spring Offsite, bringing together leaders in Client Success, Client Services, Media, Analytics, Sales Development, Organizational Management, Finance, Strategy, Measurement & Performance, Marketing and Executive Team.

This incredibly talented group focused their attention on doing even more of what makes Brkthru a valued digital media partner – the unsurpassed level of service we provide clients. This is how Brkthru has become a leader in digital advertising for independent agencies and advertisers, and by consistently managing successful campaigns for local, regional and national clients in nearly every vertical.

We took time to mark the special occasion of Brkthru’s launch seven years ago and mark the seventh anniversaries of founders Jeff Hastedt and Andrew Sklerov. There was also an occasion to anoint our recently promoted president, Jonathan Mellinger, as “King Pin” during an evening of bowling. We had more gutter balls than strikes and spares, but few were seriously keeping score.
