MY FRIEND RAUL🖐️
A Life Story
Raul's life in Manila had been a series of struggles. After separating from his wife, he focused on raising his two sons, working tirelessly as a security guard to provide for them. In his free time, he'd often play basketball with friends at the local court, enjoying the camaraderie and exercise. He also loved playing chess, often engaging in intense matches at the neighborhood park.
As his sons grew older, they moved out, started their own families, and had less time for Raul. His security job ended when the company downsized, and age made finding new work challenging. Savings dwindled, and soon he couldn't afford rent.
One day, Raul packed his few belongings and found himself without a place to call home. He drifted to the streets of Manila, carrying a small bag with his chessboard and a faded photo of his family. At night, he'd sleep on street corners, using cardboard and newspapers for shelter. During the day, he'd watch people pass by, sometimes stopping to play chess with anyone willing.
Despite the hardship, Raul held onto memories of his sons and his love for basketball. Occasionally, he'd watch games at a nearby park, remembering his younger days. His New Balance shoes, a gift from one of his sons, were among his few remaining possessions. He'd wear them sparingly, saving them for special moments.
Raul's days blurred together, but he held onto hope. He'd often think of his favorite Filipino dishes, imagining the taste of adobo, kare-kare, or sinigang. Sometimes, he'd gather scraps from street vendors and eat quietly on a curb, watching the city's energy flow around him.
