Africana Studies protestors have blocked off both the South Orange Avenue and Ward Avenue entrances this afternoon on campus.

They began a march at 3:00 p.m., protesting at the South Orange Avenue entrance, before splitting off to march towards the Ward Avenue entrance.

Protesters linked arms at both gates to block them off. “No one’s coming in or out, we won’t back down,” they chanted.

On Tuesday, a protest broke out in support of the University’s Africana Studies, with demands such as for the University to hire full-time faculty for the program. The only full-time faculty member, Dr. Kelly Harris, wrapped up his last semester in the fall of 2022.

One protester at Ward Avenue addressed the cars that were lining up to leave campus, saying they will not be able to leave unless they call University President Joseph Nyre or Provost Katia Passerini.

A group representing about a fifth of Seton Hall’s faculty is demanding changes from administration after releasing a report last week detailing the low pay of the University’s full-time and adjunct faculty.

Seton Hall’s advocacy chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) are pushing for increased pay and faculty involvement in decision making.

“We believe a better Seton Hall is possible, and that together, we can build a just workplace,” said professor Benjamin Goldfrank, the chapter’s president. “There is no genuine shared governance at Seton Hall, and there hasn’t been for some time.”

The AAUP operates as a faculty union at public universities, including nearby Rutgers, where faculty went on strike earlier this month. At private universities like Seton Hall, faculty are barred from union protections as they are legally considered an extension of administration. As such, Seton Hall has a system of “shared governance,” wherein faculty members have a say in certain aspects of University decision making.

The class of 2022 has been through many ups and downs, with their last year as undergraduate students being the first primarily in-person school year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Among this group is Paul Oburu, a computer science major, business owner, photographer, Pirates fan, and proud Seton Hall student from Kenya who hasn’t seen his family in three years due to COVID-19.
