Kristion Matas, The Culture Co-Founder
“My black voice matters because I am here. My people have been here, and we aren’t going anywhere. If anyone is gonna tell our story, let us tell it because we’ll get it right.”

Morgan Threatt, CBS Sports Intern
“During these times my voice matters more than ever. As a journalist I believe in giving a voice to those who feel like they don’t have one. In these times I represent not just myself but other black people who fit into that category as well, we ALL have a voice, and we demand to be heard. ”

Breana Ross ‘19, WINK News
“Being a black journalist right now has been challenging and rewarding all at once. It’s challenging to experience the pain of more and more instances of the racial injustice we’ve seen for centuries. It’s rewarding to have a platform to amplify the voices of those who’ve felt voiceless for so long.“

Tre’Vaughn Howard, CBS News Intern
“We live in a broken world with hateful views and false narratives. These hateful views and false narratives have negatively affected the black community for centuries. My life matters, as does my voice. This is clear and evident now more than ever, that my voice truly matters. We as an industry need to aim not only to have a more diverse newsroom that amplifies a community’s outcry for real change, but also focuses on telling an accurate narrative in each and every story told. Change...it can start with us, because we are the voice of the people.”

UMTV is proud to present a new social media series: Black Voices Matter.
We understand that our content must reflect the very nature of our diverse community and hope that these features can be a start at dismantling prejudice and forming an atmosphere rooted in empathy.
Our black journalists are visionaries, trend-setters and creators; we can’t wait to shower them with the love, respect and praise they deserve each week!

Representation matters.
Black lives matter.

When I am not inside the comfort of my home tweeting, creating Instagram stories, or Facebook posts on behalf of UMTV, I have to face the reality that I am a black man in America. My skin alone presents daily challenges in my life that most people would never assume because I cover it up with a toothy, well-intentioned smile and bubbly personality.
Black men in America are overridden with the constant pressure to be inextricably self aware of their actions.
I must enunciate my consonants extra loud as to not make people assume my background.
I must quiet my naturally loud voice as to not make people uneasy.
I must laugh, dance, and smile at a moment’s notice irregardless of my actual emotions as to not be seen as intimidating.

Truth be told, I’m tired. I am exhausted of my black skin being weaponized by those who appreciate the culture we have to offer, but don’t value us as human beings.

There is a problem in this country and not one answer exists. However, these donations, texts, calls, and petitions are a good start. A good start for the future- a future in which I imagine my own children will be entirely free to exist as themselves, in all their glorious black beauty.
