Congratulations to Daniel Wirick, the winner of BOTH features this weekend! Saturday's feature event saw Connie Smith start out leading the race. Daniel Wirick, Brandon Basye, Greg Sparks and Jason Hitchcock were able to pass her a few laps into the event. With 12 laps left, Connie made hard contact with the turn 1 wall, and bounced down into the #12 car driven by Lynn Mitchell. Connie's car was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. Luckily everyone involved escaped with no major injuries, strictly due to the quality of safety equipment and gear used by our racers. In Sunday's event, Daniel was once again able to jump out front and win the feature event. Be sure to join us for our next event, scheduled for June 13th at Shadybowl Speedway.

OVDCA drivers, don't forget to pick up your master disconnect decals from Lynn this Saturday!

04/30/2015

Lynn will provide fluorescent decals to mark your master disconnect switches so track crews can see them easily. Please see her before the first race to get yours.

ATTENTION OVDCA car owner/drivers:

Shadybowl management is now making it mandatory we install a master shut off switch that is accessible to track workers to shut "ALL POWER" off in lue of an accident. We are being mandated as to where the switch is located.

The "Master Switch" we are refering to is already on all our dwarf cars. It's the arrow pointing or handle pointing main switch that is either "on" or "off" and kills the positive power from the battery terminal. The act of this switch should be wired so it kills the entire car dead of any power. This will be our safety net to insure the fuel pumps (and all other power) get switched off. Again; this is "MANDATORY".

The issue for most of us is the location of the switch. While we understand the OVDCA rules have a mandated or highly recommended location, Shadybowl is mandating a switch be installed on the right rear quarter panel area in plain view or on Pro chassis sedans the switch can be located just inside the rear window on the deck area some refer to as the "baggage deck".

The purpose is to get everyone locating this switch in the same area of the car and have it clearly marked for track safety crews to see. There is concern about window netting being an issue if they need to shut the cars down in a hurry so the track is strongly urging everyone locate a switch on the right rear exterior of the car.

This was a common practice for ALL cars back in the day and will help track crews do their job in a more efficient manner in the event you need immediate help.

Personally; I plan to leave the existing master switch already located inside my car and simply add a second master switch in the location being mandated by Shadybowl. Simply place and wire it into the main positive lead from your battery, then run a new cable if needed from there forward just as you probably have it right now. Test to be sure with everything on that when the switch is thrown the entire car is dead. DO NOT WIRE YOUR FUEL PUMP DIRECT TO THE BATTERY OR USE A SEPERATE SYSTEM! Cars will be tested to insure the switch operates.

Cars are required to have them installed by the first upcoming race day. Contact Gary Smith, club president, if you have any questions as to the "where and how's" to get your car ready.

Following is a copy/paste of a statement released by Shadybowl Speedway management. President Gary Smith is all over this to make sure we comply with the order. Please read, then be sure to check back frequently for more information about this safety concern and what we will need to do if anything to comply.

ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS HAVING A RACECAR WITH AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP:

Fuel pressure safety switches are now "MANDATORY"!

There are different companies that carry these. They are simple to hook up and under $30. Longacre Racing part for 2 wire. Also available from Roger Winget Racecars or Hangar 18 Racecars.

There will be NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!!

New wing to cost us $25!!!!!!!!!

President Gary Smith has enough blades and brackets now available for our club while spares are still being made. A cost is now available. Wing and brackets will be $25. Money to be paid to Gary

Additional rule for OVDCA cars competing in 2015 and beyond

Beginning with the 2015 season, all OVDCA members competing will be required to install and use a spoiler-type wing atop all cars for the purpose of slowing the cars to an acceptable speed. This is a requirement by management of Shadybowl Speedway.

All cars will be required to purchase the wings from the acting club president and install the wings as instructed with hardware provided. Cost may vary depending on costs of materials at the time of construction.

No unapproved wings will be allowed and no modifications to the wings are to be made.

The wings have been fitted with the Pro Chassis as a standard due to the consistency of the chassis measurements.

All wings will be made from 1/4 inch thick Lexon and base mount and support straps will be aluminum material. If any changes need to be made in the future the club president will have the authority to approve a change in materials as long as it does not conflict with the consistency of the wing’s purpose. (i.e. lighter or heavier aluminum material or extra supports needed to insure the function of the blade)

All wings will be no longer than 33 inches in length with allowances to insure each end does not exceed the outer limits of the standard width of the roof.

All wings will be a minimum of 6 inches in height. Total wing surface will be no less than 198 square inches.

Roof lines with different width measurements by design will be allowed to run a wing that does not exceed the outer edges. The surface area will be added to the height to insure the same 198 square inch measurement.

The location of the wing will be on the roof, 6 inches behind the front windshield. For standard Pro Chassis; this line is near the existing Dzus buttons holding the roof partials down on the chassis. For most cars it will only require the Dzus buttons be removed to install the base of the wing. For others, you will have an option to install on your car Dzus plates or drill holes in the roof partial to install the base plate as long as the wing remains at the designated 6-inch behind the windshield line measurement.

Any question to determine the exact placement of the wing will be determined by the club president.

Two straps will be provided for stabilizing the wing on the roof. The straps are to be located behind the wing blade and require 2-¼ inch holes be drilled through the roof partial and 2-¼ inch bolts with lock nuts will be installed. Straps will be located no less than 3 inches from the outer edge of the wing, one on each side.

The supports will be used for stability and to insure the wing remains in an upward position at all times.

The blade angle will be checked with a protractor or similar device while the car is on a level surface and must remain at 90 degrees (straight up/down) when the car is in race configuration with fuel and driver on board. Any variance of the blade angle will result in disqualification of the night’s events and loss of any earnings both monetary and championship points.

All wings will be made so the base can remain on the car and a replacement blade can be bolted to the base. Extra blades will be available in the event you have a blade damaged. The cost will be determined by the club president.

All monies collected will cover the cost of materials and construction and any monies over the amount will be added to the general fund.

Visiting cars can borrow a blade and install it to participate with the OVDCA at Shadybowl Speedway. The borrowed wing can be returned after the race or can be purchased for future involvement with the OVDCA. Shadybowl management will be requiring the use of the blade on all dwarf cars beginning with the 2015 season. The 2-time visit rule in the OVDCA rules and regulations will be in effect meaning a visitor can borrow the wing twice but required to purchase by the 3rd event of the same season. There will be no exceptions.

OVDCA members will reserve the right to remove the wing to participate at other tracks but must have the wing on the car at all Shadybowl events including practices once the season begins.

Initial testing began today for the "air brake" idea we agreed to at our winter meeting. Extreme conditions were taken into consideration such as heavy winds, green track, and bitter cold temperatures that had my nose running but 2 cars were used today thanks to Smith Racing.

While we are still in the earliest of stages to determine if the roof wing will have any effect, I was pleasantly surprised with the feddback from the drivers. Initial tests today showed us a blade as small as 5-6 inches had about 4 tenths of a second impact on lap times. A bonus was both drivers reported more stability in the cars with the wing attached and they felt more secure.

More testing will be in the future but the idea appears to be promising. Again, we are asking you to get on board and help with the testing. The more drivers and cars we test the more data can be viewed so a decision can be made. Be a part of the club in this venture. Independent theories or testing will have no merit while we sort this out. It takes time and effort. Share some of both with the OVDCA.

The scale ramps have been installed at Shadybowl and are now ready for the 2015 season. Ramps are located in the infield near the scale house and should be easy access to our cars. Ramps have been leveled. The scales were repaired earlier in the year and have been tested. They are accurate and will be official. If they don't agree with the system you are using at home, then you need to adapt to the reading on the OVDCA scales.

Did you know? The OVDCA cars have an even higher weight-to-horsepower ratio than NASCAR!

OVDCA to test new "air brake" at Shadybowl

Snow! Who ordered this crap? Ohio weather; if you don't like today just wait till tomorrow or something like that.

Back to the topic that I'm sure has everyone buzzing, President Gary has been making up some prototypes of the new air brake we may sport this season. The concept and design is simple. They will fit most every car with very little effort and made easy to remove. The exact size (height) has not been determined and that is where you may be able to help. Gary is planning to test soon and that might take a couple of sessions to do. He wants to be very thorough to be sure the data he will be using to make his decision is not tainted. You can help by participating in the testing process. Contact Gary Smith at: 1-937-554-5300.

The "blades" we will be utilizing will probably be made from clear lexon that's 3/16-1/4-inch thick, making them almost totally unnoticeable we hope. The length has been tentatively determined at 33 inches (subject to change) and the row of czus buttons 6 inches behind the windshield on the roof line will be the standard for measuring and mounting. 2 strips will be used to support the blade. For many cars in the OVDCA, this will mean only 2 small holes be drilled in the roof to anchor the support straps. Quick and easy, cheap and hopefully functional. We simply don't know what the impact will be to know how tall the blade will be.

Once the exact size is determined the blades will be made by Gary and volunteers so they are all the same. Every car will be required to mount them to the roof.

Gary has multiple test blades already made. All we need now is the snow to melt. Again, who ordered the snow?!
