One of the most exciting things about sailing is becoming self-sufficient. Learning how much we really need—or don’t—to keep a few lights on, power the chart plotter, charge the work machines 💻 and keep the cheese cold has been extremely rewarding.

Last season we burned 140 gallons of diesel motoring down the river. Since we were without a mast most of that time, we used more fossil fuels than your typical sailboat. This season we’ve used just 23. And, we’ve eliminated gasoline completely from our lives with our newest addition, an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 electric outboard.⚡️

Living and traveling by the wind and sun is incredibly freeing. We’ve been able to live off-grid and travel thousands of miles while minimizing our impact on the environment. And while not everything we do is 100% environmentally conscious (i.e. buying produce in a plastic box, eating the occasional cheeseburger), it feels good to know we’re making some key conscious decisions to change the impact we have on the earth, without having major impact on our experience in it. 🌎
