Prescribed Burn in Catron County

The Reserve Ranger District, Gila National Forest is planning on igniting 1,000 acres broadcast burning located around the Reserve Airstrip and adjacent to Rancho Grande Subdivision. The prescribed burn is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 26, when desired weather and fire conditions permit. The project should be completed within a 5-7 day period. The Reserve WUI Prescribed Burn is a Wildland/Urban Interface Fuel Reduction treatment for the protection of the public, firefighters, property, homes, and other structures. The prescribed fire will also reduce the risk of wildfire spread to and from the surrounding area.

Officer’s have been at the schools since before school started and have been working on this situation since yesterday! There was a training for School staff yesterday on what to do in different situations to protect the kids....

That being said this is what was sent to high school parents!!

Socorro High School Families,

There are rumors circulating on social media that there is a planned threat against the high school. We have interviewed the sources of these rumors and have confirmed that this not a credible threat, but rather a discussion about a former student who made comments about wanting to do harm to others at the high school last year. The student no longer attends Socorro schools nor lives in Socorro.

Student safety is our priority. We are currently having increased security technology installed at the middle and high schools, training staff about what to do in an active shooter event, and practicing what to do in those situations. The lockdown drill at Zimmerly Elementary this morning was exactly that—practicing for a lockdown event. We have increased police presence at the schools to help reassure students that they are safe at school. Thank you for your support and calls.
