Did you know… the first woman to receive the United States Air Medal, Second Lieutenant Elsie Ott, was from Smithtown?
She was awarded this medal in recognition of her heroism while evacuating the wounded from the front line during the first ever intercontinental air evacuation.

Learn more about WWII-era Smithtown at Tuesday’s lecture with SHS Vice President and former Smithtown Social Studies teacher Maureen Smilow. Blackened headlights, Victory Gardens and hometown heroes like Lieutenant Ott — Smithtowners did their part to make the world safe for democracy.
