Piano man!

We admit it. For more than 25 years, we thought Five for Fighting was a musical group. Instead, it was simply the stage name for singer-songwriter John Ondrasik. Record execs worried his last name was too hard to pronounce but loved Five for Fighting, which is actually a hockey term. Will Ondrasik tell this story when he performs with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra at the Siouxland Chamber’s 38th annual event, taking place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Orpheum Theatre? Eh, probably not. But we think it’s interesting.

2023 was something of a learning year at the Clay County Fair.

CEO and Manager Jerome Hertel was then in his first year overseeing the "World's Greatest County Fair," after previously helping run the Alaska State Fair and the South Dakota State Fair.

"I think the first year is all about learning the culture of the fair. The people. Who's the client? Who are they? Every fair has its own little different culture to it," Hertel said. "It's an agricultural fair. We've got the largest ag display in the area ... One thing I learned from last year is that this is a shopping fair too. I've never seen so much shopping being done at a fair ... So, it was learning about the fair and who the client is, who the vendors are, who the exhibitors are. I think I've got a pretty good grasp of that."

Now that wisdom and knowledge has been put to use for developing the 2024 Clay County Fair, which runs from Sept. 7 through Sept. 15.
