Volk Furs Buying Wild Fur from hunters and trappers. Coyotes, Fox, Raccoon, Muskrat, Mink, Beaver

12/30/2024

FYI - I am looking for all types of fur. Raccoon, red fox, and coyote mostly, but will buy most types especially prime sections. I will buy dry skins or carcass. Raccoon need good tails and coyotes need to be bigger and in relatively good shape. No rubs or big damage.

If anyone has a handful of good prime badger, I would be interested.

I will be buying green skinned beaver in the spring.

Send me a message or give me a call.

2024 - 2025 Fur Market Commentary

I have been waiting until the last minute to put out what I think the market will be like this season in hopes I would hear some good news.

Overall I believe the market will stay mostly unchanged from last year. Certain type skins might see an uptick depending on current inventory of manufacturers. The manufacturers will have to replenish their stocks, so a certain level of demand will always be there. Last year the big item was Beaver and everyone was trying to catch as many as they could. From the sounds of it, the beaver market might start off lower to begin the year. Here is the rest:

Coyote - Top grades will do the best, under/over prime skins will be tough to sell. Target the prime season if you are hoping for the most $$$. Westerns will be the type skin you will want. Top Carcass prices won't be much more that $10 for the best westerns. An average around $8 might be what it turns out to be this winter for carcass goods. You might find someone willing to pay more if they are crafting. But there are not many top dollar coyotes running around if sold on a true grade. Dry coyotes will fetch more, if you can get $30ish for a top put up coyote, that might be good for this year. Anything sold higher than $30 are the more fancier western coyotes that are big, pale, and with white bellies.

Raccoon - Heavy big raccoon might be wanted for the craft market, but the smaller semi might do better than most people think. White leather will be important for the best prices.

Red Fox - Same as the raccoon. Nice westerns will be sought out mostly. The red fox market will not move much.

Beaver - Market will still be better than 3 years ago. I think it will start lower and be determined later by harvest closer to spring. With that being said, you will be able to sell any beaver you can get.

Bobcat - I don't deal with bobcat on purpose for the fear of getting stuck with high price cats. It seems if you have good color cats, you will be able to sell for a decent price again.

Badger - If you are after badger, wait until they are prime if weather permits and skin out the feet. I think badger is an item that will be good this year.

Skunk - Catch as many as you can. The craft market are wanting big skunks with good strips.

Muskrat - Nothing to write home about here, I don't think prices move much but the bigger heavier rats will be worth trapping. Some areas of the US sell the meats too. Be on the lookout.

Mink - I would try and catch a few mink. Last year I heard some interest in wild mink. You aren't going to break the bank, but they are fun and easy to catch.

I am hoping for an uptick in market prices this year just like everyone else but remember, things change in a hurry for a commodity like fur. You never know what the future will bring.

This season I will be buying all type of skins but I mainly will be
looking for good western coyotes, heavy bigger raccoon, nice western reds. Next spring I will be looking for some beaver as well.

The best advice I can give is harvest prime animals to maximize your time and effort and hopefully you will be rewarded accordingly.

Check out on Instagram or on TikTok. I will have some video commentary posted up in a few days.

Until next time...

I enjoyed talking with the 4th grade and 8th grade students today about the fur trade. It was fun to talk and answer questions about how the fur trade was in past and how it has changed in 2024.
